While some/much of what appears on this forum is of dubious merit, the wealth of knowledge and experience never ceases to impress me. With that in mind can I ask for advice on a serious matter? What should / can you do if you discover that someone you know professionally, that you consider has mental health issues also owns a gun licence?
You consider him to have a health issue..mmmm so your qualified at giving that diagnosis?? If not keep your nose out of other peoples business.
Christ, it is a tough one. If the mental illness is just your opinion and not medical fact then I can't see what you can do. The local plod firearms unit would be teh place to start I think.
Depends on your definition of mentalism - I'd report this entire BBS for owning agun. First port of call - Plod. They'll make sure the licence is valid etc.
erm.... having dealt once with a friend with mental health issues and once with a family member, it doesn't always take a professional to work out that something seriously amiss.
Does he actually own a gun or just a gun licence? If he has a gun then you probably have to report it (anonymously) and let the police sort it out. Whether he is dangerous to others (or himself) probably depends on the nature of his illness...
Obviously I am not going to post personal details in such a public forum. But the mental health issues are well established, it's the gun licence that's the news
Has the person to your knowledge ever been medically treated for depression or any other kind of mental illness,if so he must declare that on his application,if he hasn't declared, that is a criminal offence and is a matter for the Police Firearms Licensing Dept.it would most probably result in the License being revoked and any Shotguns or firearms being taken away.If he has never been treated and its only your opinion then its a tricky one, unless you can point to specific incidents that have concerned you all I could suggest is you contact the FLU and ask their advice in a general way that doesn't name names at this stage.
Re: Move My real concern is, that if (god-forbid) there was an “incident” (however, unlikely the possibility) how would I feel having had these concerns and not having done anything with the information.
Re: Move You say the mental health issues are well established....but who knows this..if it's medical professionals..he must by law declare this on his application,if you know for certain he has been treated you are well within your rights to contact the FLU,I would be surprised if they told you anything, but they would at least look in to the application,if he has omitted the issues the Police will act against him,if he has declared and they consider him still to be fit and proper,I would think you could take it no further....but at least you will have done the right thing.
Re: Move Should have kept your beak out of it. Why does everyone thses days think everyone elses business is something to do with us.
Re: Move perfect format for discussing this. i'm sure this forum of wise men will sort it, no problem.
Re: Move As it happens I am professional responsible for this person. So it’s not a matter of keeping my beak out of it.
