Just passed a body in the middle lane north bound, not sure what happened, vehicles at a standstill but when I passed no emmergency services on the scene. Quite a few cars stopped on hard shoulder after the incident in a state of shock I guess. Awful sight.

SouthYorkshirePolice tweeted that there was an accident between a 'collision involving a pedestrian' - Other reports say a lorry was involved.

    Doesn't sound good :(

Its on twitter saying that someones leapt from the bridge, l take it its the "suicide" big white one between 36/37.

That is because the M1 is closed!

Getting home from Sheffield will be interesting. Get bloody samaritans phoned instead of jumping!

Latest. Motorway open again at 7pm.

A STRETCH of the M1 is closed after an accident earlier involving a lorry and a pedestrian in which someone has died.

It is closed northbound between Juction 37 (Dodworth) and Junction 38 at Woolley.

The Highways Agency has isued a statement saying the fatal incident, involving a lorry and a pedestrian, happened at about 12.30pm.

A South Yorkshire Police accident investigation is underway and the northbound carriageway is likely to be closed for several hours.

A diversion is in place with northbound drivers being asked to follow the Hollow Square symbol taking them from junction 37 to junction 39 - via the westbound A628, north west along the A629 and then east and north east along the A635 and A636 respectively.

Traffic is at a standstill on the motorway with tailbacks affecting the Tankersley junction.

It is having a knock-on effect on town centre traffic, with Harborough Hill roundabout becoming heavily conjested with people trying to find an alternative route.

If I had been a minute or two earlier, It could have been me who hit him. Really doesnt bear thinking about. If and its a big if at the moment he was a suicide how can someone be so selfish to want to take others out with him.

    Agreed.

He is right in what he says though, it is selfish to do something like that, extremely selfish but the thing is that as you say, the person doing it is in such a dark place that they dont think, and in fact aren't capable of thinking, about the effect on others.

    RIP whoever has died.
