That's in the middle of Saint Petersburg. And people wonder why I love living here, NEVER a dull moment! PS I was hoping you were going to post that Putin has had a serious accident. Oh well, we can live in hope.
Yeah, went out to work nine years ago, initially for two months and was hooked so stayed. It was significantly weirder then than it is now, or at least it seems that way. Maybe I have just been desensitised to the oddness of the place.
That's fantastic, I don't suppose you come across many fellow reds fans and can you speak the lingo and do you have to speak the lingo?
I had somes mates at the pit that did a swap with some russian miners and went to stay with their families for a couple of weeks,,one of them was really took up with russia, really enjoyed his time out there, says it was spotless where he was.
Unbelievably, the guy who ran the main sports bar in the city was a Reds fan but it closed down and he went to Bratislava! Also one of my best mates here who now lives in Moscow is from tarn, and his brother is a season ticket holder. Yep, I speak the lingo and it is definitely needed as the standard of English here is very bad. It was a nightmare at first as I came with the typical English attitude that English would be spoken everywhere - nasty shock as I couldn't even read anything, but the upside is that it forced me to learn Russian to a high level. There are plenty of expats who do live here without speaking the language but it must be such a limitation.
I did start it but the computer I was writing it on crashed. I can't remember what order a lot of things happened in during the early days, and unfortunately it seems that the old site was never archived. I would love to do it at some point but now having a small child and various business projects on the go, I just don't have the time sadly.
That's impressive, I would love to learn another language but I've got to say Russian would be out of my depth, was the guy who ran the sports bar from Barnsley? You must have been quite shocked when you found out mate lol!
Certainly isn't spotless these days! But I can see why he enjoyed it, Russian and Ukrainian folk are as close to South Yorkshire people as any I've ever met. The exterior is pretty gruff, but scratch the surface and the hospitality is as warm and welcoming as it is genuine.
I think learning Russian to any sort of decent level without living here would be nigh-on impossible for anyone but a professional linguist. I met an English guy who spoke 32 languages once and he said that Russian was the second hardest he has ever learnt, the hardest being Finnish. Yep, the guy was from tarn. Very surprising to say the least!
Re: Various business projects on the go? I'm not sure if Patrick will accept 250 rubles and a consignment of fake furry hats. Maybe if Don were in charge of the negotiations......
Re: Various business projects on the go? I dunno, you with your business interests in Russia, Chef Tyke with his housing empire, I'm sure you could get together and sort summat out.
Re: Various business projects on the go? I suppose in the interests of accuracy I should really have added the words "very small" in front of the words "business projects"! Athough Chef did once have the idea of exporting fake caviar back to the UK. I'm sure that would have been a winner in Barnsley.
Any idea where it was mate? Just that the big coal mining regions in Russia are well into Siberia - maybe he was in Ukraine?
Re: Various business projects on the go? I might put on you for a guided tour one day. Always wanted to see the Catherine Palace.
Re: Various business projects on the go? It is quite incredible, as are the gardens at Peterhoff. I am used to doing the guided tours for people on here, at least by email! Seem to remember sending vast lists of places to see and places to eat to both Paul D and Driver when they came over!
