http://www.barnsleyfc.co.uk/news/article/ticket-offer-for-armed-forces-454555.aspx Great gesture by BFC!
At the risk of being hugely unpopular, isn't this making a decision that one section of our society are worth more than others?
Its remembrance weekend that weekend. Personally, I think it's a nice gesture by the club to give a little nod in this way to our armed forces.
Ah, hadn't clocked that it was Rememberance weekend as I refuse to click on the official site's link seen as it causes my computer to have some form of IT based mind spasm
Would have gone for a tenner, trouble being ave got a turkey trot stableford on the setdi at 11am at Newark GC, just my bleeding luck. They need to do 1 a month from now on! lol!
Good idea, maybe just before kick off ask everyone to sit and then ask Services personnel current and former to stand and give them a round of applause.......seen it done in the US at a few events
this section are worth hugely more than a lot of others matey now I did not say all , no not at all.Our Police, firemen, ambulance service etc. Many of the people who work with our disabled., well need I go on .Lots of people , BUT there are a lot who are not worth the mid-wives initial effort. Personally I would take it a step further and let all veterans of the 2 great wars in for nowt. They are true heroes.Yes some of the more recent guys are worthy of that accolade too. However the 2 World Wars were a bit different. I used to live next door to a fella who was in the Army during the 2nd ,one day out of the blue he showed me some of his photo's of his campaign , and his medals. He had served in some of the real hell holes , the battle for Monte Casino being one. I had always got on well with him and always took time to pass the time of day with him for as long as it took.He died a few weeks after he showed me his memoires. I wept like a child.
Re: this section are worth hugely more than a lot of others matey There's no-one left from the Great War. The last Tommy was Harry Patch and he died about 3 years ago. As for ex-service lads and lasses, it is again a smashing idea for poppy day. But can Oakwell accommodate the numbers who might want to come? Should we extend the same offer to the away fans and how would you administer it? And at what cost to the club for additional stewarding and policing.... though we will have the army there!!
that is a great idea mate , however many of them would not stand up, they simply do not see themselves as any kinda hero.Thats what makes them so wonderfully special to me. I served in The RAF for 22 years, Falklands and Iraq , but to me it was a job, dammed scary sometimes. But I signed on the line and knew what perhaps might be.
Where would you seat them though? The cold round back of the east stand would kill most the veterans off.
Re: I agree while many wont be big on the wwe and other american ahem "sporting events" they always make a big deal of giving there armed forces free tickets to all events, our country could learn a lesson from the yanks and give our forces the level of respect they deserve with similar offers all year round and not just for 1 weekend
top notch efforts BFC , great gesture and much appreciatted... however iv found £5 and im about to complain its not £10 there is a website www.ticketsfortroops.org.uk that give free tickets to serving armed forces, families and veterans invalided out of the srvices, they have tickets from manchester united , chelsea, man city, top london shows, snooker, england cricket games , boxing shows inc kell brook, aviva premiership rugby, loads of football tickets plus an amazing array of other stuff , all free (with a voluntary donation if you want to) , there are always tickets for chamionship games involving barnsley, but away games only, ie the home club has donated the tickets so its for home fans only... not once have Barnsley donated any tickets to tickets for troops.... must be because oakwell's sold out ever week...
