A Premiership quality team, unfortunately in the hands of an inexperienced manager,
compared to now when we have a third flight quality team with a slightly more experienced manager.
Watching it again I can't see anyone from current squad who would get in first team.

Anyway nowt we can do about it but cheer them on & hope a buyer for the club is found before its too late.

Only depressing thing is that given Hill's record last season turning round likes of Vaz Te & Drinkwater more
premiership clubs aren't willing to loan us anybody of quality.

This Man City lad may be a good player, but don't see him weighing in with the goals we need.

    What might have been eh?

Plus set on a more experienced manager than Hendrie. Tried his hardest bless him but nowt ever worked. Plus he lost Winstanley.

Couldn't understand Hendrie being given the job, of all the seasons to need to start with someone experienced at Championship level - we must have been an attractive proposition for a decent manager.

We were, I think Dennis was so scared of teh fans reaction he hoped that a fans favourite as manager would keep folk on side.

Also, Hendrie lost Redfearn and replaced him with Richardson and Van Der Lann. Well, I say replaced....

John Dennis rushed Hendrie in to try and kerb the anger from the fans after Wilson's departure. If only he had sat down over the summer and thought long and hard about a new manager, we were a very attractive club at the time in the Championship. A major turning point of our recent history.

Wasn't Hendrie installed in the same week?

That 7-1 victory was one of our finest performances ever and just so happens it was a November home game against them :)

The most telling thing about that team was the forward line. Ward and Dyer were a brilliant partnership - both were quick, powerful and could finish. Defences were so scared that our midfield dominated games by playing balls into Dyer and Ward that never seemed to end up coming back. It's noticeable how quickly Ward and Dyer control the ball, shrug off the defender and then lay it off for a first time cross. The speed and interplay is excellent to watch.

I think Davies does really well up front on his own, but could you imagine if he had one of those two up front with him? It'd take a lot of pressure off him and give defences someone else to worry about.

Also, it's been a while since I saw the Barnard goal - WHAT A GOAL!

Re: If we'd have been able to keep Ward, Hignett and Dyer in teh same team...

John Dennis just wanted another Danny Wilson. The best manager we'd ever had in the history of the club was an experienced player that Dennis took a punt on. He tried it again. In retrospect I'm sure he wishes he'd done it differently, but I don't blame him for trying.

Best three managers since I've been watching Barnsley have been Clarke (first time round), Hunter and Wilson. For all three Barnsley was their first managerial appointment. We've had relatively little success from experienced managers.

Comparable one is Hunter replacing Clarke, the other 2 came at a time when we were at a low ebb and both had stunning impacts.

I see where he was coming from, but a newly relegated side, lost its captain and manager needed a steadying hand imho.

And by the end of the year we ended up with Karl Rose and Don Goodman up top.

Was Winstanley ill that season? He had heart trouble didn't he? I think if he had been at Hendrie's side we may have done a lot better.

No as I recall Winstanley was hendrie's assistant most of that season and went on to assist Dave Bassett.

I know he had trouble but not sure when exactly.
