    Thats not true. It was made up by someone wanting to make Don McLeans song soungf like it was about the accident. The ironic thing is it WAS about the accident but not the name of the plane.

    Miss American Pie refers loosely to his ex girlfriend who was a miss america type beauty contestent at the time i believe.

    The plane was 'called' simply N3794N.

    I could be wrong about the girlfriend thing but I thought i'd read somewhere that his girlfriend when Buddy Holly died went on to be a beauty contestant, I didn't mean his eventual wife, just a girlfriend when he was growing up.

    ye knew all along,ther was no reference to it having a name in the film la bamba but i grew up with that scenario instilled in my conscience so untill theres absolute evidence i shall state it as fact:cool:
