Thanks. I've got to be honest and say that I think that is really good version and I really enjoyed listening but I don't think it's as good as the original. Nobody could give it the raw passion that Weller gave it as young man. The Jam are untouchable IMO.

A lot of Dylan covers were better than the original due to his horrible voice like Mr Tambourine Man and All Along the Watchtower and for similar reasons Joe Cocker's With a Little Help from My Friends, also Nothing Compares to You by Sinead O'Connor.

To be fair that song sounds so much like Blur it could be cover anyway.

I saw The Lightning Seeds at Brighton Concorde many years ago and Terry Hall came on to sing Sense with them as the encore. It was fab.

That's pretty good - sounds like it could have been an original Cribs song. Always a mark of a good cover version IMHO when the covering group puts their stamp on it.

Due to my age, I actually heard the Carter version first, and that was what caused me to go and buy All Mod Cons. I was also a big Kinks fan at the time, so getting into The Jam was like finding a missing link. I had always previously avoided them as I had heard a few Style Council tracks and thought they were rubbish.

I know what you mean about the Style Council. I was gutted when the Jam split so when Weller formed The Style Council with Talbot from another Mod band I thought they were going to be good but besides from Walls come tumbling down and a couple more tracks they were pretty average.

Re: London Underground by the Amateur Transplants

I love cover versions, *but* only ones that take an original and change it into the style of the band covering it. All those X-Factor Karaoke covers are just a waste of bits.

Some good ones (depending on your taste in music)

Snuff - I Think We're Alone Now, Do Nothing, Shake n Vac
John Otway - House of the Rising Sun (Live)
KLF & Extreme Noise Terror - 3AM Eternal
Johnny Cash - Hurt, Personal Jesus
    Big Black - The Model
Ministry/Revolting Cocks/Lard - Lay Lady Lay, They're Coming to Take Me Away Ha Haa!
Johnny Ramone - Its a Wonderful World

Me First & The Gimme Gimmes - Punk covers super-group

Love Employment, but the first thing I thought when I heard it was that it was a Northern version of Modern Life Is Rubbish. Which in itself is not a bad thing. Just a pity that the Kaisers have tailed off so badly. Great first album, second also very listenable. Third probably contains four decent tracks. Saw them in Moscow last year and they were not a patch on the group I saw at Elland Road in 2007. Loud, drunk and sunburnt (the band, not me!)

Was Nothing compares to you actually a cover though - I know Prince wrote the song but did he actually do a version before Sinead?
    Its a great song regardless
