after months and months of reading all opinions on here finally i have to say something. some posters need to get real and get a grip. problem is we have all been spoilt by are success since 97/98 and that generation of "new supporters" in the prem league thought of us as being a "big" club or indeed the biggest in yorkshire. we never were and never will be. in 35 years of supporting us i never thought id be embarrased to witness some of the fickle posters on here, accept what we are and why we ALL came support this great club of ours, from tuesday nights in the 80s back of the ponty freezing our nuts off getting piss wet thru,to premier league, relegation to the 3rd tier, playoff victorys and heartache of losing semi finals etcetc, were all in it together. i dont give a toss what league we end up in next season, but believe in the management set up at the moment. yes results havent been what we would like, but honestly tell me some of the football hasnt been great? anyway merry christmas up the reds
Some of the football has been good, a lot more has been a complete borefest and ineffectual. Hence the appaling record this calendar year. Enjoy thisen being taken for granted at £350 + in L1. Back to where we "belong". Seeing as you don't give a toss what league we end up in...if that was the point of the game then erm, there's no point. I think the issue is that we seem to have given up on the league where many fans see as where we should be.
I agree. I've been watching The Reds about same length of time, earliest memory is getting Derek Bells autograph on his debut(still got program somewhere) but went to matches before then. You just got to love the club no matter where we are. I know in recent years we've been fighting relegation but we are fighters. For ever RED.
That's the problem, fans see this league because of our history and completely ignore how much everything has changed at this level. This level historically had teams like Gillingham, Rotherham, Grimsby, Oxford, Port Vale, Swindon etc. Teams we could match in terms of support/size and thus funds. Not many of those left in this league now...that's success in itself.
The club aren't fighters. They have given up on the level with a whimper. Experts at telling us why something can't be done. Like I said, good luck with £350 + for season tickets in L1
Well then I'm afraid its no longer for me, good night vienna. Better things to spend money on, especially in the not too distant future
I admire your loyalty, I really do, and in years gone by, I felt the same. BUT what it boils down to for me is enjoyment. Do I enjoy going to games? In the last 2 years I'll say 80% of the time NO. So then it's down to "is it worth it?" ... well I can probably afford the season ticket ... but do I want to afford the time? Every other weekend a full Saturday taken up, when we as a family could be doing something that we all enjoy alot more. The thing I look forward to most about matchday is meeting friends. It used to be the match, the occasion and the prospect of seeing entertaining football and coming away feeling proud to be a Barnsley fan. Sadly I just don't get those feelings any more (or VERY rarely). So, if that makes me fickle, then so be it, but this club has had my backing for 30 odd years, through good times and bad, but when you're just not enjoying it, and have other priorities, what is the point in investing time andmoney into something that looks like it will get alot worse before it gets better?
I'm not always talking about the team although given Keef's endless monologues about how well he is doing with his broken legs etc it is not hard to see whey you would assume I am talking about the team.
The only thing that is in the stands is apathy. That's down to the programme we've had since Robins left to reduce any expectations to nil. I'll stand by it, the club have given up on this level. Can't increase revenue, can't increase gates, can't retain better players, can't attract better players. No leadership off the field. Club is in a vacumn and theres one person to blame.
The trouble is people have different ideas of enjoyment,to some a string of 1-0 wins no matter how lucky, bad or boring the games have been (although we could do with some at the moment) and everything in the garden is suddenly rosy.
The fans? We're getting back to a level of support we had in the early 90's. The club is having to deal with that at a time that it's more difficult than ever to do well in this league and money is everywhere. I agree things could've been done better but they should be applauded for doing things properly just like they were being 2 months ago. You're not meant to enjoy supporting us - rough with the even rougher.
A winning side hides a multitude of sins but I don't see what I should be enjoying at the minute. Unless we are supposed to appreciate possesion at the back over goals now....
I do applaud them for aiming to run the club at break even but will not applaud the attitude oif the club - it is can't do all the time. From the Fall Guy to to your man. Amd yes, apathy reigns in teh stands. There's been no dissention about Hill not because peopel aren't pissed off with our shambolic record and not because there is a mass understanding of the difficluty of where we are at (although many DO understand) it is more like that people just can't be arsed anymore.... We have not consolidated in teh division due to the lack of vision at "board" level. The wrong manager at the wrong time in Davey was divisive and despite his cup expolits (Just for you SM) wasn't up to it.
We've won 17% of our games THIS YEAR. Definitely more bad than good. Spoke to many neutrals since Saturday and they said we were great to watch at times, but were the architects of our own downfall. As in, we waste precious time getting nowhere, and when we do get anywhere, we're profligate.
