Both had 72 games at their respective clubs until now. Jewell had 72 games at Ipswich, with a win % of 38.9. Hill has had 72 games at Barnsley with a win % of 25.
NOWT Because Jewell had a bag full of jewels that were worth ££££££££ Zillions to start the league campaign And Keef had a bag full of coal and a packet of Walkers cheese and onion crisps to start the league campaign
But his budget was to get them promoted and our budget just to stay up. So based on what was expected in the job on the funds available both have failed. If Jewell had his budget to simply stay up like Hill has to do for us you'd have had a point.
with money so tight why do we have 30+ first teamers? It seems to me we have 3 teams of the same calibre, I think KH has fallen into the trap of signing 15/20 players who are of the same calibre. We would be better with 20 players of whom we pay 10 very well, and hope they stay fit.
Were there many better players available for free? He's gone down the route of signing free transfers mainly - a 500k transfer fee plus 8k a week knocks almost 20% out of his budget.
But he might have got a lot better return than 4 wins , if he had bought quality over quantity! Just because they were available for free/ very little it did not mean he had to sign them all, give them contracts and wages, then not play them.
Agree entirely mate, my only point being that it's easy to say we should've got better players but there was a general consensus that Harewood/Mido/Cranie were the Championship experience we were after. All freebies. Better players are likely to be in contract so need a fee. If not, they want more wages. Do you throw all eggs in one basket and go for a laiker with big wages or 4 and hope one comes good? Merits for both.
I highly doubt clubs like Boro and derby have a wage bill much more than our own. Same for millwall ans Watford. It's not where you shop but how you shop. 60 players in his reign...
Watford a different strategy completely, Boro already had a nucleus of players and beat us to Carayol (and don't forget Woodgate at centre half) Derby and Millwall are cases in point - patience with the manager brings success. Derby have had massive turnover of players under Clough and invested (money on Shackell, Sammon, Ben Davies etc). They are a side at the minute we should aspire to but considering their fan base I highly doubt their wage bill isn't 50% bigger than ours.
Hill is using a scatter gun approach to signing players, when he needs to be more like a sniper. If he used some of his intelligence he would watch players and have his scouts watch them at regular intervals, then he would be able to make a more considered choice, taking into consideration the weaknesses in the team. Same with his approach to bringing in loans, he just signs a few at once and hopes they work out. Mental approach to managing a team. We have a very large squad and everyone knows that we still need to bring in more players to shore up the weak areas. In 18 months we are worse off now than when he arrived, but we have twice as many players on the books !
Isn't that what we did at the start of the season, then after about 10 games we had about 10 injuries, hence the reason we signed about 6 players. The trouble being we've never solved our centre half problem.
