So the nurse who killed herself after the hoax call had already tried to do it twice

in the last year and had definitely been on powerful anti depressants because of this until just 6 weeks before her death and may have still been on them when she died and her family had been told by psychiatrists that they should prepare themselves for the fact that she could attempt to kill herself again.

Does that change anything? Does that take any of the burden off the DJs and onto other people? Her family who allowed her to live away from them with only contact via telephone? Her employers who allowed a highly vulnerable suicidal person to work unsociable hours in an area around the royal family?

I don't think the dj's should hold any burden anyway. The result of their prank was so far removed from what any reasonable person would think the consequences would be. This latest information backs it up too.

The DJ's were reckless as to the consequences of their prank, at the very least they should have realised that they could have been costing someone their job, wasting a hospitals and professionals time to the detriment of other patients. Phoning a Zoo up and asking for Mr Lion or Miss Ellie Fant is a bit different from phoning a hospital ward up pretending to be a relative

Not at all surprising. Having listened to the prank call, there is no way anyone in their right mind would kill themselves over that. I hope anyone that vilified the DJs feels like a proper lovely person now.

The frenzy was completely whipped up by the media in this country who just wouldn't let it go. Not for the first time this year, the words "witch-hunt" spring to mind. I am completely against any form of legal restraint of the press's freedom because that is not the kind of country I want to live in, but fecking hell, I really wish they would realise the responsibility they carry sometimes.

Totally agree with you on the press freedom thing. I do think there was a complete over-reaction to the Aussie phone-call too. In any other scenario we Brits would have had a laugh about it and moved on but when the royals are involved everybody has to be squeaky clean. Furthermore, when there is a suspicion of mental illness as there was in this case then one wonders why the press had the gall to pursue the djs when they were almost certainly not the cause of the mental ilness in the first case. The trouble is when the press react like they do the lemmings of society fall off the same cliff. The press do have a responsibility to phrase their reactions in a more mature way.

It's not exactly crime of the century. There were obviously massive failings at the hospital that should feel the burden before the dj's. I am sure there has been far worse pranks, this one just had the very sad and unfortunate consequence that it had. I can't see that anyone can blame the dj's. I respect your opinion if you think otherwise though.

Re: So the nurse who killed herself after the hoax call had already tried to do it tw

But you re missing the point. Not everyone is the same. The DJ's ran with the prank not knowing, considering or caring about the victim's frame of mind but simply to boost their ratings and egos. It's has also been said that when a prank call is made the radio station always contact the victim of the call to request permission to air it. But unfortunately in this case they simply said they tried to contact the hospital on numerous occasions but to no avail (the hospital responded by saying they received no such calls). Surely the question must be asked as to why then was the prank call aired without said permission?
Probably because they got carried away with what they had managed to pull off and obviously didn't care about procedures in their quest for a worldwide exclusive. Perhaps if they had the nurse would be working at the hospital today .

    Never blamed home DJ's.

My first thoughts were that she must have had other problems

Re: So the nurse who killed herself after the hoax call had already tried to do it tw

So not the type of person you should be playing a prank on then.

"But the DJs didn't know she was so vulnerable!"

    Exactly.

When members of the public are hoaxed in such a manner the perpetrator has no idea of the victim's situation or state of mind and no thought for it either. If you know someone you're aware of their predicament and their general demeanour and you know if a practical joke is appropriate. So you wouldn't humiliate or embarrass them if they'd just lost a child for example or they were suffering from a severe depression or they'd just been diagnosed with a terminal disease. It would be totally inappropriate. But when someone is selected at random you've no idea how it's going to effect them because you've no idea what type of person they are and what they are currently having to deal with. At best it's extremely thoughtless and at worst it can be callous and damaging.

That doesn't mean I agree with all the s.hit that was thrown the way of the Australian DJs. At one point I thought we may have another suicide on our hands. But if anything good comes out of this I hope it's that confident people in a position of power think before they decide to humiliate someone who may be extremely vulnerable.

It's **** comedy anyway, laughing at someone else's expense.

So how did it humiliate and embarrass her???? Until she took her own life nobody knew who it was.

    All in her mind.

I never heard anyone complaining about Simon Logan on radio aire who did the same every morning for years

enf of the day if was never meant to cause anyone any harm, or to personally hurt or embarrass anyone.

I honestly can't believe anyone would take such a hoax personal.

I just think what happened would have happened anyway

Did Simon Logan ever ring a hospital and try to get information about the health of somebody or their unborn child? I doubt he did. He probably put a funny voice on and rang a double glazing firm and wound up a receptionnist who was set up by her mates, or some such "hilarity".

I really cannot work out what these DJ's were attempting to do. I'm pretty sure at that time no-one knew what was wrong with the Duchess or her child. Would it still have been funny if there was something seriously wrong? Even if they knew nothing was wrong, is it still not sensitive information? Is it not invading the private life of someone who may have been in a delicate situation?

They never really gave any thought to the poor people they were getting a cheap laugh from. I'm sure it was all intended to be a joke and with no mailce at all, but when the information could be so sensitive and with absolutley no idea on the character of the person answering the phone, they really should have considered their actions.

That was exactly my reaction when I heard it. Sad as the consequences may have been, I do not think the DJs should be vilified as they have been.

Seriously? Because it was headline news in every country around the world. A hospital taking care of the future queen of England had been duped and she felt responsible. Her mistake was a global event. Maybe that wouldn't embarrass and humiliate you, but it certainly would me and it quite clearly did the same for Jacintha Saldanha.

    Could not possibly agree more.

Exploiting and humiliating people who don't ask or seek public attention is crass in the extreme.

In this particular case - leaving aside who she is - there was a young woman under medical care with a chance of potentially losing her unborn child - if that's an area for 'humour' - irrespective of where it was aimed then it's time to pack up and go home.

I don't particularly hold with a lot of the mock outrage etc aimed at the DJ's but I genuinely hope it puts and end to such antics.

I don't think I am missing the point. Authorizing the airing of the prank us not the dj's responsibility, that is done by producers/directors/editors. Same as with the Ross and Brand call. I simply can't blame the dj's for her death.

i have the utmost sympathy for the nurse and her family, but i think the point is " what the **** was she doing working as a nurse when she was that ill" its not as if she'd sprained her wrist or owt

That's not the point at all. Do you want to deny employment to people with depression? Often fulfilling employment is the only thing that helps get people through such tough times and it can actively help people overcome depression. Feeling wanted and valued at a place of work can be a massive boost. What are you proposing that everyone with depression should be at home in bed? That'd really help.

to be honest I am surprised she had been caring for Kate

think about it.Normally the security surrounding our Royal Family is immense.I am surprised MI5/6 or whatever did not pick up on the nurses history and object to her being around the Royals, or even have her removed from the medical team.In her state of mind she could have easily administered some incorect medicine or treatment.Think just how the public would have reacted to that. Its very sad that the lass had fallen into such despair, and its always sad when one so young takes this action.I had a very close friend do this and also a family member on my wifes side too,its devastating.

Totally agree with Jay. The prank call had a devestating effect on the nurse. It's not our business to try to assess the nurse's frame of mind and make a judgement about her.
The thinking (or lack of) behind some of the replies is that the victim of bullying is at fault for allowing themselves to be bullied.
