Just coming back from Drayton manor and on the m1 had a blow out. Now I've never had to change a wheel before, (I have now) but it was the drivers side on a hard shoulder, Bloody scary, so glad I had everything in boot, torch, hi-viz good spare wheel etc etc
I don't think you're supposed to be changing the wheel on the M1 are you? Especially not the drivers side. Think you're supposed to call for help and get a professional to do it where they can stick a van behind yours as a blocker. Glad it all worked out in the end anyway, must have been scary
Glad you didnt have a nasty accident. You are lucky you have a proper spare - its getting increasingly difficult to find cars with them these days Fortunately never had a high speed blowout but had a few low speed or needed to change a wheel due to nails etc Not sure what to do next time I want to change my car as most come with a useless repair kit now
The police that drive by wasn't too concerned, was I suppose to ring then I didn't know that thanks, Yeah we all good thanks
I have always had it drilled into me to make sure I have things in boot incase of situations like these. I have spare light bulbs triangle, hi viz for 2 people, first aid box etc.
I could be wrong, I usually am, but I thought that on a motorway you're supposed to pull over to the left as far as you can, get out of the car and wait on the grass/behind the barrier and then call the AA/RAC/whoever you're with or walk to the nearest SOS phone and get someone to come out there. I'm probably wrong though and what you did was fine. Would have thought that the police would have pulled up behind you and put their lights on anyway just to provide you with some cover whether you was doing right or wrong.
Nope they drove past and that was that, I pulled as far as I could, to be honest I **** myself all the time until I was moving again
Mate it's really worth having a little box with things in, I even have a mat to kneel on incase it's muddy, wet or what ever
I've got a toolbox in the boot with a few things in but not really much useful. Got a tyre inflator (an electric pump to me and thee), a battery jump starter, torch, tow rope and obviously an ice scraper. Not really much in the way of safety is it. I'd have a spare bulb but last time me headlight went it took me an hour to change it
Illegal now mate I lad at work got picked up by the Police for trying to change a wheel on the M6 last year. They let him off but he had to call a tyre fitters to come out and do it for him. Cost him a fortune.
Give you another good tip, we have a charger for our mobiles too, chuck that in glove box and only a couple of quid. I k ow ST about changing lights bulbs some models are a bugger to do.
Re: Illegal now mate Had a look and cant find a law that says its illegal best I can find is the Highway code thats says do not attempt repairs - usually when its illegal it says you MUST not .... https://www.gov.uk/breakdowns-and-incidents-274-to-287/additional-rules-for-motorways-275-to-278 That said I dont think I would try and change an offside wheel on the hard shoulder whether or not its legal
You should have called the Police and they would have arranged for someone to come and given you protection. You are not supposed to use warning triangles on Motorways or change wheels.
