As caretaker I was suggesting. Unite the fans at the very least. Except you it seems.

Eric should have been involved in bfc in some sort of capacity years ago IMO
He's Mr bfc and he would have given some sort of guidance and advice to people coming into the club
Along with Norman rimmington. they'd have let people know about the history and expectations of the fans.

Was caretaker after Clarke and Hendrie got sacked. Overall has a very decent managerial record for us, despite a 7-0 hiding at West Brom!

I think its 10 years too late for him unfortunately as currently his health isnt the best with knee and also his heart isnt 100% at the moment. 15 years after his quad heart bypass.

I know there wouldnt be a prouder person to help out his beloved club but sometimes things happen too late and I suppose for a reason. Currently he is back home after 3 years working for Spurs in their overseas academy as the development manager. I dont think the stress of BFC would be good for anybodies health let alone someone with health issues!

Onto Markf's statements I find them honestly bizarre to state that someone who was part of the most succesful era in the clubs history and who worked his blood to water for the cause (I hardly saw him growing up because of the time he spent at Oakwell or Scouting) should be subject to such attack. But, oh well, each to their own I suppose.

Next to go onto the fact that he had something to do with John Hendrie being sacked; I have documented this before by my old man was laid up in Hospital from the start of the pre season and for the vast majority of the season that Hendrie was there recovering from a Heart Attack and then the aforementioned quadruple heart bypass on the 11th September. I find it pretty tough to understand how someone can be responsible for getting a manager the sack when he was laid in bed for months. From my recollection he didnt get back to Oakwell until well into the New Year (Feb or March time at the earliest).

I'll leave it at that cos I don't think its myplace to get involved in an argument with a nameless person on the internet especially on behalf of someone else even if it is my own Dad.

I know one thing for sure that he is one of us and would feel just as bad as we all do when we lose.

I remember thinking at the time, and still do, that if he hadn't been laid up during most of Hendrie's season as manager, things may have panned out very differently. Hendrie was pretty much on his own as a rookie manager. Looking back on it, although he made a lot of mistakes, a lot of things conspired against him as well, especially the serious injuries sustained to Watson and Hristov.

Your dad was my boyhood hero, I still remember with fondness some of his "Roy of the Rovers" performances some 45 years on !
I'm sure there are MANY other Barnsley fans who would empathise with my view.

Eric Winstanley....... a true Barnsley legend

Terry - likewise to above poster.

Your old man was, and always will be an Oakwell Legend.

My first memories of going to Oakwell are of the 1967-68 season, when your old feller captained a cracking BFC side to promotion from the old Fourth Division.

He must have been seriously rated to be Danny's right hand man in 96-97.

Always, always be proud of him, feller, cause I am and I'm only a fan.

All the Best to you and your Dad.
