I'm just pleased that he can square his socialism with regularly being plastered in sponsorship for various bastions of capitalism, and being payed a handsome salary thanks to Rupert Murdoch's millions, not to mention the corporate stuf he most likely does on a regular basis through the club. Aye, with principles like that he's a modern day Eric Liddell that one. As a top sportsman in the UK, I'd be quite interested to know his tax arrangements too, not that I'm suggesting for a minute that he'd be doing anything untoward in this regard..... Anyway, best player in the world? Has the NRL been on strike for a year or something?
"People might take the piss but I've grown up with those beliefs. Che Guevara was my dad's hero and our house was full of Cuban posters. My parents went to Cuba, and I've got the same belief that socialism is better than anything. It's not something I usually talk about because it must sound hypocritical - me sitting here as a well-paid professional sportsmen. But playing rugby league doesn't stop me holding on to my ideals."
Sinfield is the pure personification of a one club man. He has been over the last 10 years the lynchpin on which the rhinos success has been built on (along with JP and McGuire). He is an inspirational leader and had a kicking game that is unparalleled in either code. He's managed to kick teams to death in the playoffs for years and is one of rugby leagues great organisers. Bloody boring to watch though! Give me Tomkins, Slater, Thurston or Cam Smith any day of the week! And his defence is suspect.
At least he knows what a massive hypocrite he is. 'Doesn't stop me holding onto my ideals' - you've got to laugh. Still the point stands, he's no more a socialist than I am, it spins well for the Rhinos fans though. By the way I've just realised in my previous post I wrote the word 'paid' as 'payed' and wish to apologise profusely for this.
Garry Schofield used to do much the same for Leeds, however he was a far far better player than Sinfield (and was genuinely world class), and he only won it once! I don't doubt Sinfield's value to Leeds (every club would love a leader/kicker like that) but surely he's nowhere near being the best player in the world?
Maybe he's just waiting to finish his rugby career before leading a socialist revolution? If he can inspire this Leeds team to grand final success he might even be able to get you to join him!
I'm too young to remember Schofield. But I'm a sucker for people who makes the absolute most of their talent and are able to inspire a team to greater achievements than it should on paper actually achieve.
