That's correct.....I think we played Plymouth on the 6th game at home....4,500ish there. We won 2-1....relief amongst the faithfull was immense.
6th May 1985 vs Wimbledon attendance was 3053 drew 0-0 was lowest home crowd i was ever at. Historically though- December 12th 1932 vs Crewe attendance 1451 won 7-1 May 10th 1966 vs Wrexham attendance 1577 won 3-0 April6th 1973 vs Exeter attendance 1638 drew 1-1
1577 v Wrexham, 10th May 1966. Won 3-0 with goals from Martin Ferguson (2) and Bob Earnshaw. Ferguson's gone up in the world then? Now scouting for his big brother at Man U. I also had a look for lowest attendances for away games and have got 894 for the amazing game at Workington, 7th April 1976, which we won 7-1 with John Peachey scoring a hat-trick and Peter Price two under Jim Iley. I bet you can't find that on you-tube!!
I was at that Workington game Our other scorers that night were John Saunders and Bob Doyle with a penalty. Workington had a huge advertisement painted on the roof of some covered terracing, similar to ours with John Smiths over the paddock. Theirs was for a local ice cream company, proudly displaying the slogan 'We Take Some Licking'! It seemed to take bloody hours to get there and back from the game!
And it was a poor game, livened up only by Gordon Owen flattening Nigel Winterburn with a sweet headbutt. They both tried to carry it on in the tunnel after they'd been sent off too.
Re: 96/97 promotion season Triple dip recession. Actually we're in a depression it's just not being called that.
When did we beat Portsmouth 4-0 at home in the league (Agnew scored)? 1990-ish? I remember being in a crowd of just over 4,000 then.
There was a 3-1 home defeat to Southend where Ricky Otto scored at least two, maybe a hat-trick at the ponty end in the first half. One of the worst home games I ever remember, along with the 3-1 home defeat by Plymouth when Dwight Marshall got a first half hat-trick. I was actually convinced we were going down after that match.
Total guess, but I'd imagine the Anglo-Italian cup matches will be in the frame (the prelim round before anyone played Italian teams). I seem to recall we were in a group with Middlesbrough and Grimsby and that we took 16 fans to Boro.
Re: I was at that Workington game Well pissed off with that 7-1 had choice of either Watford or Workington due to finances and picked Watford, lost 1-0. Mi lucks nivver changed over the years really.
Look at the average attendances after the war! We need to kill some Nazis, that'll get people flooding back to Oakwell.
