Hi I agree the fee is under valuing the player but at least it's more than Chesterfield got when we signed him on a Bosman. Some you win others you lose, but as a general rule we lose out usually.
His contract would have been agreed around the same time a Vaz Te's. That ground has already been covered and we hope lessons have been learned.
How do we generally lose out? You look at all of the players we've sold in recent years, there isn't many we didn't make money on. Vaz Te, Butterfield, Hammill, Shackell, all sold for more than we paid for them.
I know for a fact that we lost money on Hammill (from the horses mouth so to speak). Can't remember the exact details but Liverpool got a lot of money from the sale in 'sell-on clauses' and by the time we'd paid him his wages, we had lost money on Hammill. Was worth it considering his contribution though. I think lessons were learned from this instance. On Davies, well.. I think 300K is a shockingly low amount for a championship club's top goalscorer. If we made an offer of 300K for a striker, what caliber of player do you think we'd end up with? Would we even end up with a League 2 club's top goalscorer? I don't think so. We're backed into a corner to a certain extent with his contract being up in the summer and business wise, I suppose it was the right decision to sell - especially given his recent form but I just can't help thinking that we should be getting more for players like him. We know we're a club that's going to lose its best players come the transfer window (and for many plausible reasons) but there must be a better way of making this process more profitable for us, cos 300K isn't going to go very far. Offer longer contracts maybe? I don't know...
