Sure the next candidate on the list will pop up shortly, but until then how about:

1). On the basis that appointing a legend could ruin their legacy why not appoint an ex-player who was absolute gash - it can't make thing worse and could only improve their popularity. So Deon Burton and Paul Gibbs in combination?

2). Expand the search a little. How about Ivaylo Petev from Ludogorets Razgud (Bulgaria)? Won the double last season in the clubs first ever year in the top flights, and has only lost two games so far this season domestically. Could also bring in some of their squad on the cheap and we could all listen to Eastern European marching music before every game to get in the spirit of things....

Anyone else got any "alternate" suggestions?

That stale solbakken has a good record in Norway and Denmark - admittedly ropey in Germany and England - why not him?

And as for ex players who were absolute gash - there is an almost endless list of possibilities. I'd plump for Kevin Richardson and Ian woan.

I wonder whether Jason Barker would be interested in the post?

since his playing days came to an end i believe he's been quietly picking up his coaching badges in non league and could be a decent bet.

Applied so far as I understand as part of a management team with Paul Ince after he played under him at Notts Co.

My left-field suggestion is that we use this as a money-making exercise for the club by finding an outside candidate on the list with a common name, lumping on and then appointing a random off the street who happens to have that name. Let them be in charge on Saturday with Flicker as 'assistant', fire him on Sunday, and then add the funds to the budget for the new man.

Pretty sure there must be a Mark Hughes, Phil Brown or Peter Taylor out shopping in the Alhambra at the moment. Might have to extend the search as far as Asda though.

    Easiest 66/1 shot in history!

Deon Burton was only here on loan. We've had enough s1te here on permanent deals. Kevin Donovan being my choice then :)

Left-field - Jamie Carragher player manager. Commanding centre half, wants to go in to management, wants to stay in the north. Read his autobiography, deep thinker about the game. We might not be able to understand him though.

Didn't think he was a bad player for us, not one of the best but Keith Curle was a name I heard mentioned last week.

If we're being sensible about this, one name I'm surprised hasn't cropped up yet is Andy Ritchie.

I'd put him above quite a few of the other names personally, although I have no idea what he's doing these days.
