George Smith, Left Back - Uncomplicated with a ferrari engine will run all day
Ryhs Oates, CF - Big strong and a real handful for any defender. Good old fashioned C/FWD
Macauley Shillito, CMF - Sits deep and controls things, two good feet and a reliable finisher
Brad Abbott, CMF - Mr Nasty ! Good passer both long and short, links the play.

Let me know your thoughts tomorrow.

    KO 6.30 tonight

I thought Oates was a CH or is he the Parkin type CH and CF

As far as i know he has always been a CF. He has played CH but he is a better player up top. From what I have seen of him he may turn out to be a Jonny Parkin as he is big strong and quick. As he matures as a player he might well revert to playing at the back as he is decent in the air too.

Same age as Stonsey, Clark, and Rose. Stead, Kilburn, Patterson and Scott all same age. That was a youth team worth watching. The best i have seen down there for years and years

Rhys Oates tried hard but his hold up play wasn't good enough last night. Shillito sat far too deep first half and let Oxford get forward too easily. He played further forward as game progressed and grabbed himself 2 goals. Abbot was Barnsleys best man, controlled the midfield and won his tackles, good distribution and link up play. Smith at LB had a good game. Great work down the left for the third goal. A player to watch !! Best team won but they made hard work of it. Tom Williams came on and showed his blistering pace and caused Oxford problems.

They will have to play better next Tuesday in the next round against Stevenage. I spotted Flicker, Steele, Perkins, O Brian, Rose, Stones, Digby and others in crowd watching. Good to see them supporting the future players.

At the risk of getting banned again, for me the root of the problem in the first half was the system. They played a diamond, but the wingers were too wide and the Shillito started far too deep. The frustration I had of Abbott 15 yards directly ahead of Shilito down the centre of the field during that first half, with the wingers too wide to contribute anything to the battle for control in the centre, even on such a cold night had steam coming from my ears. When the coaching staff did change it, they simply exchanged Abbott and Shillito, which left the problem in place. Only in the second half did the system change.

I thought the half time score flattered Barnsley, and although the end result was right, the eventual scoreline flattered us.

Who was in charge of the team? Heckingbottom was standing pitchside for most of the game with someone else I did not recognise, but Burton made the substitutions and Branson seems to have a watching brief.

Great result for the young lads, thanks for the report. :)
It's disturbingly quiet in West Yorkshire, he's probably making plans to have you killed. :D

Ecky runs the team with a guy called Chris???? Think he came from Huddersfield, but not sure. Shillito a better finisher than Abbott but i agree there was too much space centrally. I was confident that the big pitch would catch up with Oxford but the game could have gone if they had taken their chances. Eric kept giving the ball away and Omari flattered to deceive at times atlhough he did show glimpses. They might have been better playing a 4 - 2 - 4 (diamond) allowing Shillito or Abbot to support ther attack but still having defensive cover. Important really because the two CH's didnt look comfortable at all !! A definite weak point for me.

I thought it was an okay performance from the young reds. IF they finished the chances it could have been 4/5 but they didn't have hit the keeper or post far too much. I thought they played better when Mcknight came on and they went to a 4231 formation with Maris wide left. Oats looked a lot quicker than i thought and had them when the ball was over the top only if the finishing could have been better.

And what about the keeper hey, a keeper that comes for crosses and can kick straight. I couldn't believe my eyes the first time it happened.

yes for the standard they played they really played at a level that was hard to stop. Also when you think RNL digby and lucas could have been part of that squad too.

Thought the keeper did well, the save at the forward's feet was especially brave. However, he has some growing to do.
Thought Abbott started very slowly, but he improved once we got our system sorted.
Thought Maris showed good feet good strength and would have scored with better luck.
The outstanding player on the night was the left back (George Smith) who has plenty of pace and endurance, just what is required in the modern game.
Overall though I was a bit disappointed.
