It followed the same pattern too. First you have a string of small independent shops. Then the huge chain-stores move in and all the independents close. Then the internet giants corner the market and the chain-stores close. Then you've got nothing. Nothing but pound shops. I wonder if grocery shopping will follow the same path. We're already in stage two.
The Internet is killing the high street.... Although some of the recent companies to fold didn't do themselves many favours.
I feel like I am part of the problem because I buy all my music and pretty much everything from Amazon or iTunes and I am a member of Love Film. The problem is that Love Film is so good compared to Blockbuster that it just doesn't give them a chance. Likewise with Amazon.
Thing is if the online world is making high street jobs go, won't that make more jobs in the warehouse and distribution ?
don't think they would get away with your shopping being delivered from jersey. But if they could, you would have that bang on...
BB have been dead in the water for yonks- simply not adapted - just the same as HMV. They are yesterdays retailers-like Woolworths. Nowt to do wi recession.
It needs to go the other way, people need to support local businesses even if it does cost a couple of extra quid. And the govt. need to sort themselves out and get Amazon etc paying tax.
To be fair it's a completely different business model. Blockbuster are really competing with illegal downloads, iTunes and the introduction of box office on Sky, Virgin Media etc.
And they had the muscle and financial clout to adapt at the time change was needed ... Miserable management failure and lots of good people on the dole because of it...
Amazon et al tax stuff needs sorting but that's a side issue here. Amazon an amazing visionary company.HMV management not up with it-they uk high street non-adaptive plodders...
It's only a great business model because they can charge less. HMV made massive mistakes (poor adoption and never really recognised attitudes to music/film changing) but the key thing was they charged more than Amazon.
