Seems a bit harsh. http://barnsleynewsandsport.com/201...r-travelling-on-barnsley-fans-bus-court-told/
I thought so too. Especially considering his relatively low wage and service. Slap on the wrists, asked to pay it back. All seems like the new chief wanted shut.
Surprised they're allowed to print his salary. I wouldn't be best please if I was him. Seems like they had it in for him. The quality of the sports section in the Chronicles suffered since he was axed imo.
What's that supposed to mean? I hope you know something that the rest of us don't otherwise it's just a gratuitous slur.
I've no idea why ayone would see the way he's been treated as harsh. It's pretty straightforward really, fraudulently claiming expenses is a gross misconduct offence in most employers' eyes, and gross misconduct = summary dismissal. Neither failing to claim expenses in the past when he might have done so (no doubt his choice), nor being paid around 22k a year (for what we all know is a pretty cushy number all things being considered) can excuse the offence in question. As you've now seen, even on this scale fraud is seen as a criminal act, so it's somewhat self-evident that it should also have been viewed by the Chron as a sacking offence. It's possible they wanted him out for other reasons too, however he gave them a perfectly reasonable excuse to sack him through his actions. Only got himself to blame.
I mean it seems a fairly minor reason to sack someone if they are doing an awesome job, especially if they could have been claiming over night accommodation, subsistence, days in lieu etc. On the other hand, employers often find it difficult to remove staff that have worked for a company for a long time but aren't performing.
Is it any different to a sales rep claiming for a 500-mile round trip when he's only done 450? Or someone filling up a jerrican with diesel after they've filled their company car with it? Or two travelled in one car but both claim mileage? I reckon just about everyone I know who travels for a living has some little fiddle going off. It wasn't like he didn't even turn up for the matches. He could have had a slap on the wrists and told to get on with it. On the other hand, if the new guy wanted shut and his own guy in, then he's got the perfect excuse.. Been done before.
No it's not. Those are all fraudulent actions, therefore all likely sackable offences, subject to the relevant company's policies - so better hope they don't get rumbled!
Totally agree. Just seems like his service, loyalty and dedication to the paper was ignored. Yes discipline him, put him on a final warning and make him pay back but to sack a man and take away his livelihood seems very harsh to me. I feel quite strongly about this, I am quite disappointed with the Chronicle over this.
Gratuitous slur? No it's not. It was a mildly curious suggestion that there might be more to the story. Stole money to fund drug sex orgy addiction is a gratuitous slur.* *Not Andrew Lodge.
fiddling your expenses is wrong regardless of whether you're good or ***** it seems to me that he knowingly defrauded his employer of a few hundred quid
There's a slightly different mood on this board to the stance taken when MPs did it. (Tin hat on) :nails: BTW I think it was over the top but I feel he knew what he was doing so it can't be called a mistake.
Very Harsh If he'd taken his car and stayed in hotels etc, it would have cost the paper more, he actually saved them money. I think there must be something else to this story.
That's a very good point, in terms of the law there is no difference regardless of whether you're an MP or a sports writer however I think that taking into account all the circumstances that some leniency could have been shown to him.
And considering only a couple of MPs have been prosecuted, majority have kept their jobs and just asked to pay the money back...
What a silly man. To jeopardise the job he loved over such small potatoes, particularly when his other actions show he wasn't the money grabbing type. As a species we don't half do some stupid things.
