Personally i'd take him back, past aside. Still got a few years left in him.

Can he still do it at this level?

I'll support him obviously if he returns, but I can't see him being a fraction of the player he was. I hope he proves me wrong though.

Strange decision, if true. Not in Dawson's mould or league. Not a patch on Bobby defensively. Not fit to lace Mellis' boots.

    Strange.

If he's free and on low wages he would be worth gamble. Different type of player to what we have got in the squad and would offer some competition to Mellis in the central AM role. At least he'd have a shot or two.

Thing is tho whitey, he's a completely different type of player to those u mention. None of them try and run beyond the strikers, break the back line, have a shot from 25 yards etc. or if they do, it's rarely successful.

He's more of Dawson type player than Bobby is. Much more energy and box to box.

Don't forget Dawson's scored a couple of goals this season. I wouldn't be against this as a short term deal.

A fair short term replacement for Dawson imo.

For me Dawson doesn`t come close to Brian Howard in his prime, but that aint what we are going to be getting it will be a lesser version who hopefully can still hold his own in the Championship.

Did anyone see him on Soccer Am, how did he look trim, overweight?

This would be a brilliant signing, he's free, he's match fit and if he's like the old Brian that left us then that would be superb!

According to those who have seen him of late, Pompey supporters, he's fat, slow and lazy.

Only time I saw him this season was on Sky in the Summer in a Cup game I think. Looked quality, scored a pearler.

Look, I'm a huge fan of Brian's, from his time here. I've never criticised him for how he departed, like some do, and I'm not averse to a return. I just don't see that position as a priority and don't see how he's going to be any better than what we've already got. Ie - Mellis, Perkins, Cranie, Bob, Cywka, Tutu etc who can all play in central midfield. As can O'Brien when he's rarely fit. Oh, and RNL is a central laiker.

The one thing that does tend to intrigue me with this, is that perhaps Howard will have summat to prove? He may see this as a chance to really become a Tarn legend in helping us to survival - firstly - and then seeing his career out with us.

Interesting times. Still find it strange, though.

Would love to see him back at the well...

Howard offers something our current crop of midfielders do not, A GOAL THREAT FROM SET PLAYS!

a decent dead ball. None of the current crop offer a threat from 30yard freekick and decent supply from corners are in short supply.

    Howard
