It's easy to say that from a privileged first world view point, how do you think we behaved in the past? You are talking about cultures and societies that were at one time, far more sophisticated and advanced than our own that have retreated into fundamentalism and superstition as the rest of the world has developed around them. There are many aspects to these societies that are out of step with modern western values, but you have to look at then objectively as individual human rights violations, not as the identity of a nation of a religion. Such things exist as controlling mechanisms for totalitarian groups who would not prosper under a peaceful democratic system.

    Well said.

    Link

As Ghandi replied when asked what he thought about Western civilisation, "It would be a good idea."

If you've not seen it check out the documentary 'The Fog of War' featuring Robert Macnamara's confessions about the Vietnam War. Extraordinary stuff.

Yeah, just imagine actually having the ability to freely say something and having people comment on it. This is crazy talk and will never work!

So now we've moved off of bird wars and onto genocide. Awesome. All football forums should be like this

I don't for one minute think these values represent the values of any nation as a whole but they are certainly a lot more prevalent in some societies and there are no signs that things are starting to improve. Part of my point, as you also made reference too, was that most nations left these values behind centuries ago but for some reason there are still people in this world who under the blanket of 'religion' believe its ok to behave in a barbaric way. There aren’t too many societies who would tolerate the stoning to death of a woman for adultery or in some cases for being raped (they are all someone’s mum, wife or daughter). It may not be the whole nation but there are very influential and powerful groups of men who run these countries and who are nothing more that barbaric, brutal and bloodthirsty radicals who are extremely intolerant of anybody or anything that doesn’t fit in with their warped ideals.

Cage (maniacal over-acting): you know what you've done!
Clooney (calm, unruffled): I'm just a man. Trying to get by, the best I can

33 replies to a tongue-in-cheek post, not bad.

My favourite is "I have a friend from Afghanistan and he is very nice". LOL.

I don't think you can count mine as it was made in self-defence - I was only trying to avoid suffocating under jedi one's faeces.
