There are a lot of experts on here

A lot of people on here seem to have a lot of opinions on what has gone on regarding the potential Jon Stones transfer without having any access to any facts or the background to the whole affair. Or a knowledge of how football transfers happen, how agents work, what discussions have taken place between BFC, Jon Stones, his agent, interested clubs, etc. In fact, there are a lot of people on here who seem to think they're the world authority on everything. And whatever happens at BFC it always seems to be wrong and the club (Don Rowing in particular) appear to be able to do no right.

And yet we can only get less than 8,000 people to turn up to a home game when we're on a decent run and actually need the support. If we had bigger crowds and better support we'd be in a much better position when it comes to keeping players, getting better transfer fees, etc, but the simple fact is that we don't. It was the same last season with Vaz Te. There were complaints about us letting him go and about the size of the fee and yet when he was hitting his purple patch the crowds at Oakwell were actually falling.

If we want to have more influence on the club's dealings there has to be more of us down at Oakwell, rather than just the same old voices on here knocking everything that happens. It really gets boring reading it. Every player that leaves is a world beater who is worth millions, everybody we sign is an overpaid useless has been and Don Rowing, who is trying to run a football club with no money, spends his time trying to think up ways to pi55 of a dozen or so moaning gets who spout off on here. Apparently.

Instead of moaning why not get yourself down to Oakwell and use that energy to get behind the team. You may even find that you'll enjoy it.

It is equally as boring seeing a player start to become a real asset only for the club to sell him at the first sniff...

 

The old chicken and egg debate. We find a good player - fans get excited - he gets sold way to soon - fans grow more disillusioned - football gets more fcked up - butterfly dies in China.

 

It's nothing personal at all. I just don't think the off field management is up to it. That's not their fault.

Possibly not. There certainly appears to be a lot of responsibility heaped on the shoulders of one man. But I just get fed up of the attitude on here.

With transfers there are two considerations - the club and the player. As far as the club goes we may well have been made an. Offer for Luke Potter, turned it down and ended up with no fee and no player. We certainly had a lot of interest in David Watson only to end up in the same boat. £3m, if that is what it is, is a lot of money for an 18 year old full back with less than a season's first team experience playing in a bottom of the Championship team who attract crowds around the 8,000 mark and have no other means of generating large income than player sales. No matter what the potential of the lad is. I don't want to see him go, just as I didn't want to see any of our better players leave, but that's the way it goes.

But as far as the player goes its a no brainer. A 3 or 4 year deal on Wigan's money will earn him more than most of us could dream of earning in a lifetime. And he must have Luke Potter in mind too. Aside from the money, he's bound to have ambitions to lay in the tope flight and for England. That's not going to happen whilst he's at the Reds.

So there's the fee to consider. A £3m basic fee sounds about right. As someone else points out it makes it the fourth highest transfer fee in world football for an under 19 year old right back and the 13th highest transfer fee in world football for an under 19 year old defender. And who knows what other add ons there may be. It beggars belief that people are moaning about the terms of the transfer when A, it hasn't happened yet, and B, they don't know the terms that they are complaining about!!!

I look at the value to us and what the loss of a key player will do at this time in a relegation fight. In my opinion £3mill 'just' starts to cover it. But if we go down, it's not just 1 season's loss of revenue, it's the risk we don't come back for a few seasons.

But this is one instance, taken in the round of recent player dealings and how we seem to accept our lot with not so much as a whimper ('beat the bookies') then I think we're being run in an appalling fashion, and the timing and price of Stones' move (if it happens) reinforces that view for me.

I wouldn't knock Stonesy for trying a shot at prem football - I think he's capable now, his developement this season has been superb and he's flourished. It'll be a different type of pressure in the Prem but you can't blame the lad for wanting to try. It appears to me though that we can't wait to take the first offer of decent cash as soon as it appears - what's up with selling in the summer ?

There's only one set of folk to blame for 8,000 crowds, and that's those that run the club. There's been no positive message, no 'box office' signings , poor management of the team manager situation and a pricing policy that defies logic and reasoning. THEY have brought all this on themselves, no-one else, and no amount of cosy meetings with a small group of fans can hide that. The club's on the slide, irrespective of Flitcroft performing a miracle and keeping us up.

 

I understand the point and putting it in context with the sales of Davies, Howard, Vaz Te & Hammill. But this is completely different. We've given a lad a new contract when he was playing well earlier in the year, we've talked him up in the media and seemingly rejected approaches of less than £3 million throughout the window.

Rather than slamming 'em, I reckon they've done everything spot on this time. The only problem is the timing.

 

Dyson, they aren't good enough. They've papped their pants at £3 mill, and given no thought to the timing in my opinion.

 

Are you suggesting the people knocking the Stones transfer don't go to Oakwell? It seems that way to me.

I haven't said anything about it, but I've read a lot of opinions from people who think it's a bad move I know for a fact that they go to games every week.

 

Well said. £3m is a lot of money for Barnsley, with add-ons it could be more. Clubs wanting Stones will know the ceiling price for a player of his age and position (if he was a striker you might add several more million to that price, but right-backs just dont go for anywhere near as much). Barnsley will have a figure in mind and then somewhere inbetween there will be an agreement on the fee. I'd imagine there will be a sell on % clause in there somewhere which with other addons could take it close to £4m.

Got to agree with all of that mate, absolutely rock on! People slagging off the club without knowing the fee, sounds about right for our fans.

Put the 3 million we may get for Stones against what we received for the likes of Hammill and RVT and i think we've done a good bit of business....If we see 1.5 - 2 million of this re-invested i for one will be happy. From another perspective we have some excellent and exciting prospects coming through at oakwell, we can't keep selling them.

 

Do clubs not have insurance on players any more to pay out if they get serious injuries?

 

Everyone just winds themselves up on here until it becomes more and more sensationalised. Happens all the time.
