Thanks for that bit of advice. I did however get the fee correct - well according John Beresford's own site Anyway, that's not really the point merely there were fans that were a little perturbed at the transfer and the fee involved (I think)
Good post MR C - I don't begrudge any player moving on, especially to a "better" setup -this shows we can develop players and talent who improve the team, there is little to be gained from having a team of cloggers who no one wants. But, I think these days we don't seem to be getting even 1 season of benefit from those players, which is a real shame.
Beresford went to Portsmouth at a time we were both vying for promotion. Play of the season as well (not officially) and we played Pompey in last home game of the season. A number of us voted for him as player of the year but I think the club just ignored voted for him.
A big difference from the 70's and 80's is that players usually went onto better things, they wernt sold so they could warm benches. We didnt have this ridiculous transfer pantomime with sky sports having a reporter outside every players home.My frustration when players go now is born out of the fact that some club with more money (usually money that isnt theirs) can come along and take our best players just to for them to be loaned back out or play in the reserves, which in the mean time means we cant progress. If i'd my way players that were sold on would have to play a minimum amount of games from the starting eleven for their new club.
Interesting to note the posts and the differing years and players etc. If you want some fun go to: http://www.soccerbase.com/teams/team.sd?team_id=208&teamTabs=transfers An you can go right back if you click 'choose another season box'. In 1912 we brought nobody in and nobody went out except George Utley who was released - bet he was guttered. Oh we won the FA Cup that year didn't we!!!
Re: geddis , Cunningham and Larry May Tony Cunningham - useless - delighted when we got 2/6d for him.
Re: geddis , Cunningham and Larry May I was just going to post about Geddis - wasn't he top scorer for the season when he was sold? Good shout regarding Larry May.
Pretty much, yes. It's just there wasn't an internet for you to spend hours obsessing about it. "They dunt wanna go up."
according to that soccerbase thing we didnt have any players in or out from 1977 to about '85...i've not bothered looking at any other years after reading that.
That was being levelled at the club in 96/97 season. I miss the days when I could only moan like **** in the boozer Friday night after reading about our latest sale in that morning's Chron.
In fact, thinking about it again, it was much worse back then. Now there is debate, people taking both sides of the argument. Back then everyone was certain the board would sell their own granny for a quid.
When Mick Butler was sold to Hudders for 20k...proper kick in the nuts....but found out years later that that fee saved the club from going under.... Lets not be too harsh an PC and the Don....if Stones goes i'm sure its not been an easy decision...and its done with the best interest of the club at heart..
Re: geddis , Cunningham and Larry May Larry May going to Wednesday caused a good deal of umbrage if I remember rightly.
