wont date lol its out dated now, a P45, UB40, and a notice of redundancy would be more fitting as a town crest these days

 

The problem with the current badge is its hard to differentiate from a lot of other teams who have crests such as burnley. If you showed a selection of badges of that nature to non football fans they wouldn't be able to tell them appart. If you showed them a Swansea Norwich Wolves badge with the simple animal on they are instantly recognisable

 

Why would anyone care what people who aren't interested in football think of their badge?

 

It's not just non football fans I bet if you showed our badge to football fans around the world very few of them would recognise it, to be honest I bet the majority of football fans in this country would struggle to recognise out badge

 

The first game at which I can remember the toby dog being paraded on the pitch was the great Southport FA cup tie of November 26 1966. Best part was that a couple of Southport fans cam on the pitch with the aim of chasing the dog, but it barked at them, snapped at them and saw them off the pitch, much to the delight of the reds fans. I seem to remember that this made toby tyke a lucky mascot and he was there for the next round at home to Port Vale, at which I recall the announcer saying that he he had brought us lots of luck in the previous round and let's hope he did so again. Although we beat Southport (who were top of the table at the time) 3-1, we could only draw 1-1 with Port Vale, who parked the bus (as they had the reputation for doing). Their goal was hugely controversial, as there was a whistle whilst the ball was in flight, so Ray Wood left it. Then the ref gave the goal. I have no idea if it was the ref's whistle, but believe it was, or one from the crowd. Either way Jackie Mudie's goal gave them the lead and we then battered them senseless until Dick Hewitt scored a richly deserved equaliser. Vale goalie Sharratt (no relation to ours) was simply outstanding that day. Port Vale could not set out to defend at Vale Park, so we got more space to play and won 3-1. So on to the Cardiff City game in round 3, which we drew at Oakwell (last kick equaliser from Johnny Evans) and lost 2-1 at Ninian Park.

 

We could always use a personal injury solicitor and a traffic warden ?

 

I had to wait till getting home to see if the ref had allowed that Evans equaliser, I jumped up int air and next thing I knew I were at bottom of banking at the side of Brewery stand along with all the others rushing to get a flyer.

 

I'll try and drag some old programmes out sometime,but I thought it was used in the early 70's

That Southport match was a cracker! It was like Barnsley had just emerged from a long arctic winter of despair and were suddenly blinking in the bright sunshine. With the recent acquisitions of Barrie Thomas and Johnny Evans we suddenly had a threat up front and I doubt if two players have ever had such a dramatic impact on a club's fortunes. We might be seeing a dramatic upturn in fortunes now under Flitcroft but back then the transformation was astonishing. From crowds of around two or three thousand we were suddenly pulling in over ten thousand and the town was buzzing with the new look down at Oakwell.
Southport were the strongest team in the Fourth Division with a tank of a centre forward called Jim Fryatt. Beating us was a formality but they were simply blown away. This really was a GOOD time to follow your home town team yet there were still people getting buses from Barnsley bus station to go and watch First Division football down the road at S6. Mind you, I don't think that lasted much longer when that big club started to decline!

Its not the council logo, its the towns crest.

 

I think the present coat of arms badge was introduced by Mr Doyle when he took over.

 

That's my favourite, the oak/well logo. But that is probably because that was the badge when I was a kid so remember it fondly. The Toby Tyke one is a bit gimmicky for me.

Why does it matter if other fans know what our badge looks like?

Can't see how it matters one little bit.

 

No I think its fitting for us tbh but probably the supporters not actually from the town may differ.

Not neccesarily wrong south Yorkshire was a mining area and most of the local players were from a coal mine or were former miners ,
Having said that the saying could have been said at a lot of clubs as mining was a common occupation in large parts of the country Newcastle,Oldham,Nottingham etc etc

I've just googled it and there is correlations between BFC and the nickname 'Colliers'. You learn something new everyday.

 

The Toby tyke emblem was originally from above the bar in the old supporters club. The landlord had it painted by a local artist, he owns the rights to it and is currently the owner of the copyright I believe . He is now the landlord of the mount on pontefract road. This is how he can use it on the signage and windows. The original is still in the pub on one of the walls. It was cut out of wooden wall from the old social club before it was knocked down.

I believe he allows the club to use in merchandising but not sure what he gets in return, my dad says something to do with the Mount being the Official Supporters Pub. It does its benefits as half the squad went in for a pint on the way back from beating Liverpool a few years ago and I do know the club sent Soccer Am up there to do some filming a few years back.

I dont think that the tattoo places are legally allowed to use it but I dont think anyone minds really.

I doubt the team will ever have it as a badge as they probably may have to pay to use it? m
