No your wrong there Phil doesn't own the rights to Toby tyke t goes a lot further back than that. I can remember Phil getting the old supporters club and his predecessor who we used to call jockey Wilson because of his uncanny likeness
Nay give him some respect at least he didn't fob you off by saying I don't know Mount and football club were my locals many moons ago.
Ha!I was there too! The Winstanley hat trick against Watford lingers on still ! And you are right about Hamstead's corners too! Re the mascot I Don't remember the actual dog but Toby Tyke was an imaginative marketing step for the club at the time! I remember buying rolls of TT stickers. Think Ozzie Owl was born around the same time
Oh yes, those stickers - forgot about those. I remember buying a strip of the peel off ones, quite small about the size of a half crown maybe? (Yes, this was pre-decimalisation). The idea was that you could stick them all over town, school, shops, wherever. Kind of stick on graffitti I suppose, but much less harmful. I had one on my wooden pencil box at school and one day I noticed an Ozzie Owl one had been stuck on there as well. The late Dave Buttle (aka Bub), known to some on here, was a big Wednesday fan (not sure why) and he thought it would be funny to stick Ozzie alongside my Toby. Ahhh, schoolboys eh......coats for goal posts, what????
Correct DanT. As a fan and designer and for what it is worth... White Rose: Can't take ownership of a county emblem. We should never have used it and as much as it pains me to say it, our version was really poor in comparison to the iconic Leeds badge. Toby: Love it but it's not right for the shirt as it stands. There could be an argument to re-design this to make it appropriate. So many other clubs have animals/birds to represent them. However this would be a costly exercise to do it properly. Current Crest: Far too much detail to become an iconic football club badge. Plus it represents the town. It is not specific to Barnsley Football Club. Oakwell: This is the best option that we have. Simple, iconic, unique, specific to the club and its home. And it is memorable. Plus it has heritage. For me the best football club badges are the simple iconic ones. eg: Bayern, Arsenal, Spurs, Wolves. Down to personal opinion really and you would never please everyone. But if it became a requirement, it just needs someone within the club to take on the responsibility and appoint the right quality of agency.
Was Bub an over weight kid? Had a lambretta in early 70's? Lundwood? We always thought the name Bub was short for Bubble when I was a lad- he was a similar shape to one tbh- and was a face around town - nice lad too if I remember right. Lot of owls in town in those days ....
I know where it came from now -I have asked Phil the landlord from The Mount, he said it was a drawing done by a players daughter. She was a young girl on a bus going to an away match just after the original toby tyke dog died. Someone saw her drawing it and asked her to do a bigger one which someone used as a template for the one that was above the social club bar. She came into the Mount a few years ago to see it (I am guessing it was when Frank died in 2011) and told Phil the story.
Re: here you go He thought the bit about us being called the colliers was a mistake. If you see his follow up post, you'll see what I mean. The Colliers was our nickname before the tykes.
If you mean he was a Man Utd fan then he must have changed sides cos he was definitely an Owl at Broadway
