Gwyn Thomas for me - biggest thighs ever. Gutted when he was injured against Chelsea - finished his career!

    What about Grahame Pugh

    hard as nails.
other candidates, from my time of watching the reds in no particular order includes:

    Alan Little
    Gwyn Thomas
    Norman Hunter
    Neil Redfearn
    Mal shotton
    Kenny Burns
    Paul Futcher
    Mick McCarthy
Dawson from the current team looks as though he could be added to that list.

Kenny Burns wasn't so much hard as dirty.

Duncan Sharp for me. He'd put his head in where you'd fear to put your boot. He was like a rock in the middle of defence. After him, Norman Hunter and Alan Little, with an honourable mention to Gwyn Thomas.

Depends what you mean by hard. Are we talking bare knuckle street fighting or being able to get up from a nasty challenge and still play your game? Being tough on the pitch doesn't mean you're tough off it. There is footage of Norman Hunter practically running away from Francis Lee and though Andy Todd was reputedly one of the hardest arseholes in the game, it didn't stop floppy haired Ashley Ward going for him with both benches rucking as well. And I like the bit of Redfearn knocking Lee Bowyer on his arse without a by or leave.

If we're talking generally, I would say Chris Morgan. Though if he had been truly hard, he would have apologised to Iain Hume and took what he had coming like a man.

I think you've got it pretty much covered there.

He only played a bunch of games on loan, but Alan Dugdale worth a mention...

    Pat Howard hardest I've seen.
Alan Little wasn't so much hard - he just couldn't time a tackle and finished up-ending loads of players accidentally..

In my time I would go with McCarthy, Shotton, Thomas, Cooper, Taggart, Stumpy, Redders, Morgan Boo. Probably missed some. Not sure how hard they are off the pitch but they were rock on it.

Surprised no one's mentioned Graham Pugh. We had a fearsome midfield when Pugh and Alan Little were unleashed in the 78/79, 4th div promotion season

    Pugh was just daft;)

Remember promotion from the 4th and he was in the directors box in just his jock strap (rest had gone to the crowd) smoking a giant cigar:D

    Always liked him:D

Coops clashed heads with Carl Bradshaw and broke his nose. Bradshaw went off after wandering around in a daze in front of the Ponty whilst Steve played the rest of the match with a bottle of smelling salts in his hand and a pair of black eyes.

Others I'd choose would be McCarthy, Taggart, Kenny Burns, Gwynn Thomas (until the dirty ******* Graham Roberts stamped on his knee), Malc Shotton, Carl Tiler and Darren Moore.
