Always seemed to do well. No idea where to buy a CD from in town now.

The Council need to hurry up and sort this revamp out. After living in manc 7 years after uni I feel the change. Need to get a few more designer shops but is it worth them coming to Barnsley? Can imagine a jd sports doing well, maybe a foot locker, gstar shop also. But not with the confusion n if its worth opening a shop to close it down for the revamp.

Come on council, sort it out. No one wants to open a shop in a place which is going to be knocked down.

Also why not look into developing some retail parks with quality eating. Barnsley is lacking chains like Chiquito's, Nando's etc.

You have unwittingly answered your own question. The reason you can not buy a CD is because your beloved chain stores and retail parks have monopolised trade, homogenised the high street and killed the independent trader.

The marketing man has groomed you well. You need to buy original art, it will enrich your life - repeat after me.... :)

There's a place called Jim's Records just off Summer Lane apparently (across from the George). I'd never heard of it til my brother told me last week.
It's an awful truth, but the internet is where it's all heading. They don't have to pay extortionate rent/rates for some tiny room on the high street. But the councils just milk them for what they can get. And there's plenty of folk out there willing to take loans out in order to realise their 'dream'. It'll dry up eventually though; every pub will be a Wetherspoons, and every shop a 'Hypermart'. Get ready.

Barnsley has a realchance here to do something different. if this new development actually goes ahead and the town center gets a re vamp then the council should be doing its damn hardest to offer cheap rental space to independent retailers/artists/musicians etc. There is a real potential to create something different to identikit shopping centers found elsewhere else. A few "big name" anchor stores will be required but apart from charity and pound shops what else do we have currently....

    lets do something different!

I owned a record shop in Leeds for 10 years, but we went out of business 5 years ago now & I lost my house & everything.

I now run a DJ business & intend to visit Jim's Records next time I come to tarn to see my mum & dad.... that is the sort of place you need to get behind.

I think you are right. I haven't lived there for 25 years though, but the soul has gone out of the town centre

There hasn't been a decent music shop in town since Casa Disco. Even HMV are just focussed on chart music, want something out of the ordinary and they either don't have it or it's about £20.
Went in this morning as they had "Closing Down Sale" signs up...even then it was the usual stuff marked down, anything I was interested in was still full price!

    On games - FIFA13 - £52!

And they wonder why they are going out of business.

I don't buy physical media at all any more. I'm probably to blame. I don't download either. All streaming

EGS was better than Casa Disco.

My favourite was always Track Records in Doncaster though, sad day when that closed.

I can't buy any of the music I like in shops these days so I have to get all mine from Amazon. Shame.

What was the record shop opposite where Subway is now called?

I don't do internet shopping, prefer to just get something there and then. Been let down too many times. Play.com used to be good but last thing I ordered was the wrong game plus took too long to get what I wanted.

HMV has always done the job.

    Barnsley needs a 'that's entertainment'.

I've spent many happy hours in the ones in Castleford, Wakefield and Leeds and I reckon that sort of thing would take off in Barnsley because of it's low cost nature.
