http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-atPDcewBw Stumbled across footage of it. Well chuffed. I was only 8 year old. What was everybody elses first away day? And if you've got footage, even better.
Bradford City away 1986/87 season, l was 10, drew 0-0. I had a season ticket from 3 year old in the West Upper next to the exit behind the directors box so l rarely sat in an atmosphere, l was mainly surrounded by suits, sheepskins and cigar smokers. Went to Bradford and l was then in a swaying standing crowd that were - climbing the fences, throwing toilet rolls on the pitch, singing, abusing coppers & opposition players, singing the de dum de dum de dum song to the coppers as they marched by. Loved every minute of it.
Bit peeved at the footage I found, now I've watched it. Thought it would show the goals, extra time, pens. But no, just the first 3 minutes of the game. Basterds.
Here's mine, from 48:36 in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhkGxsa4h20 Me and my dad used my uncle and cousins Wednesday season tickets as they couldn't go to the game. My dad jumped up when Redfearn scored, and this fat old woman in front of us demanded that a steward threw us out, I was 8, and I was babbing myself. She was well chuffed when Di ****io scored a late winner.
31st August 1968 A 0-0 draw away at Rotherham United. In those days, there was only the highlights from one game on Match Of The Day and one of the local games on a Sunday afternoon on YTV (usually Leeds United if they were at home). http://www.barnsley-mad.co.uk/results_service/1968_1969/31/aug/index.shtml
Having to walk out in between a load of deedars singing "D.I CANIO" was quite difficult for me as a rather naughty 14 year old. I joined in, but changed it to "D.I WANNKIO" before my dad gave me a clip round the ear and called me an idiot. A "*******" idiot in fact.
Hull City 0-2 Barnsley 17 November 1979, age 14. Went on the special to the old Boothferry Halt train station at the back of the away end. The irony of ending up living here since 1988 is not lost on me
Cambridge United in FA Cup in 1983. We lost 1-0. Went with Royston Legion and stopped off in Newark on way back having a police escort around all the pubs.
Re: 31st August 1968 Drew 2-2 at Donny was my first away game..early 70s....cant remember who scored...but can remember we had a very snazzy Watford Esq kit of red shorts, yellow shirt with a red and blue strip running down one side....never saw it befoe or since...
1975? Seem to think it was a green, rather than blue, stripe down the left side, but my memory could be playing tricks. We certainly used the kit for over a year. We even used it when playing at Huddersfield (spit!) in the League Cup at the beginning of the 1975/76 season. It was the strip we wore when we won 7-1 at Workington, April 1976. Wasn't the 2-2 draw at Doncaster on a Friday night?
Re: 31st August 1968 I always thought it was Halifax Town away on a Tuesday night, but checking the dates it seems that was actually my fourth away match. My first was Doncaster away, 2-2 draw on 23 September 1978, a day before my 9th birthday. We were on the telly the day after on Football Special and I saw myself behind the goal. Great birthday present. I then went to Stockport on a Friday night and York in the fog before the Halifax game.
Re: 1975? You may be right about the green stripe and not blue....yep it was a night game, cant remember if Friday or Tuesday....and as for the Hudders match, I was there, but still cant remember us in that strip....christ my memory is worse than I thought,,,hehe..
Don't take this personally, mate But I'm glad I'm not on my own with regards to having problems with my memory!!
If you're interested, mate The goals from that Donny game are included in JackTatty's brilliant video. http://bbs.barnsleyfc.org.uk/showthread.php?184577-Some-retro-BFC-footage-i-never-tire-of-watching
Re: If you're interested, mate Wow, some goals on there that I haven't seen since being at the games, particularly Lester's at Middlesborough. Weren't we good in those days. And a full Oakwell too. Sigh!
Re: If you're interested, mate Only seems two minutes ago to me. I love these nostalgic videos. The wonderful days of our youth!
