And does the cost of the claim affect you later insurance apart from the accident itself?

e.g £500 worth of damage compared to £500,000 worth of damage

Not sure but I wouldn't have thought so, don't think they penalise you for hitting an expensive car.

The cost of the claim does make a difference to premiums in the future. If you write off a clapped out old escort leaving the companu to pay 300 quid replacing it it is better for your future insurance than if you write off a merc worth 80k. Its not a life changing difference though but there is a difference

From what I remember from my days when I worked in the industry that's not true, a claim against your policy is a claim against your policy regardless of value, and weights your future premiums the same. The only difference is if you want to get rid of the claim from your policy in order to get your NCD back. In that case you must pay back the whole cost of the claim, whatever that may be. So often, especially for a young driver, it is well worth paying back a £300 claim as you'll save much more on your premiums. Obviously if you've written off a £40k Merc it's very unlikely that paying your company back will be worth your while! Come to think of it, I'm 100% sure I'm right, as I dealt with a case where a bloke had lost two years NCD after two claims in a year, and he had to pay back just one of them to reinstate his bonus. Obviously he paid back the less expensive one. However, different insurers have slightly different ways of calculating their premiums, but this was definitely the case at Norwich Union in the late 90s and early 2000s.

My worst one was hitting a deer at 55mph, made a bit of a mess of the front of my car, and the deer!

Glad to hear you're okay, mate. You certainly seem to be taking it far more calmly than I think I would!

Easy to get complacent driving sometimes if you don't remind yourself of what can happen. Delighted you and Rosco survived such bad accidents, I pray I never have one. Was in one with my family once many years ago, narrowly missed it being a lot worse.

I think one of the things that surprised me most was that after the initial shock/pain after getting out of the car and having a sit down, finding out the other guy was fine, was how calm I felt afterwards.

Then again that could have been another form of shock, going the other way.

Was amazed to find that I could move everything alright.

Very thankful to be alright now though!

I broke my right wrist at 15.

As you can imagine with grit, endeavour, intelligent energy and a Linsey Dawn McKenzie video I bought off a mate for a 5er I managed to pull through.

    Literally. You reds.
