Seems a bit strange to come out so publicly then retire.

Not really doing much for gay men who want to stay in the game.

    AGREED,

I really do hope he can rethink his decision and decide to play on.

I understand why he feels the need to retire, But he can be a role model and maybe drop certain boundaries.

Yes he might play for Leeds as some on here will have a hard time about but its not about them Its about a young man feeling he has to do this

WE SHOULD ALL AS FANS SUPPORT HIM AND HIS FAMILY

Jesus christ, I knew that there are not many, but only the third?!

Perhaps there are other reasons why he's retiring, but it's a shame anyway. The world of football is still living in the dark ages.

Can you imagine all the "hilarious" songs and "banter" from the opposition fans (and probably the fans of his own team too)?

I cant say I have ever heard of him!
He must not be in the first team, so therefore in my opinion he has just thought "25 and I cant get in this shitty side, then **** it!!"

No it isn't. Football hasn't made him retire, HE has made himself retire. Football doesn't force anyone to hide their sexuality, it is they that choose to do that. In that respect you could argue that homosexual footballers are the ones living in the dark age, not the rest of us who couldn't really care less if they were straight, gay, bi, or into shagging car exhaust pipes on a friday night.

Also boxing, tennis, rugby, athletics etc must also all be living in the dark ages

You have a good point, but I feel that you very much overestimate the open-mindedness of the human race there (the underlined bit).

He was actually released from Leeds after only playing 42 minutes for them in over a year. He's found himself unemployed with no club wanting to take him and in my opinion that's why he's quit the game, because he's crap.

Ok maybe not all of us but some of us. I would say that the majority of football fans wouldn't care and it is only the small minded minority that do. The same few who sing songs about the yorkshire ripper, or about the munich disaster. These people, whilst quite vocal at games, are largely slated by the vast majority of people so I'd say that shows that the football world is quite supportive actually.

I had never heard of him before this either, and judging by his statistics and career history on Wikipedia it seems that his career has gone downhill a bit lately. He has made 18 appearances for the US national team though, so he can't be that crap...

Madmark could have got in goal for the US national team if he'd been born across the pond

Just looked up about his career and I reckon for sure it has nothing to do with being Gay and all to do with not being good enough!
4 games for Leeds and 6 for Stevenage in his 3 seasons in Europe and 1 of them he never played a game in Holland !

In that case Madmark would have no trouble at all in getting in goal for the England team! :p

OY!!! I was better than most of the keepers they have had over the years! That I can be sure of, the later ones have been some of the better ones in the Premiership though.

They've asked him twice but he keeps turning them down.

Actually Madmark and BigLil both keep telling everyone that they're retired as wrestlers. I can only conclude that they must be gay
