In the current economic climate should Barnsley council sell it's highly valuable private reg plate 'THE 1'? Or is it a good thing for the council to have?
No We should kick these fekin tories out before they transport s fully back to the poverty stricken 30s
Why not, they're having to sell or consider selling a lot of property.2 obvious questions are; How much would they get for it, and would the proceeds make much difference to the cuts?
Get more for selling their share of BFC! Do they council own the Metrodome? I know Liverpool city council is considering selling some of its sports centres. We have a fantastic one near me with an Olympic size pool and an anthletics stadium - bet the Metrodome would be worth something. They shouldn't have to but most councils, ours is one of the worst in the country, is having to fend off some very savage cuts
Barnsley Premier Leisure (BPL) runs the Metrodome on a non-profit basis on behalf of the Council (I think). The council have recently announced that it is to cut it's funding, which will of course affect the services they offer. 2-3 years ago staff took a 25% pay cut.
Councils won't be able to justify to this Govt things like free sports/leisure for all kids. The Tories just don't do things like that.
Unfortunately mate general public complaining seems to get lost amongst the 'we have to accept that these Austerity measures are the only answer' mentality. You're right of course about the failed Olympic legacy.

Wouldn't have thought the number plate would have raised enough money to make a difference to services, but if it does let it go
In the 1930s, George Orwell heavily criticised Barnsley Council in The Road to Wigan Pier for spending excessive amounts of money on a lavish, outwardly impressive Town Hall to confer status when the majority of the Town's population were living in poverty and squalor. Nice to see things have moved on in 80 years :/ I have said for years they need to get rid of it. The last time I looked at private registrations, there were far less desirable plates than 'THE 1' going for over £100k. Outrageous really.
They'd get **** all for something like that in the grand scheme of things so I dont really understand the relevance of the question.
Itd keep 10 front line council employees in work for another year. And thats a conservative estimate based on a valuation from a few years ago and on sales of other plates.
As far as I know, BPL is profitable for the council, the number plate might be worth a few hundred thousand at the most which is a drop in the ocean when it comes to the councils budget
Do they still have that? Had it when I was a bairn on a big fat Daimler. It is bollacks, hardly befitting of an elected civic rep in these times. I'd keep it for now until they regulate other wastages and bad budgeting, otherwise it would be used as a figure fixer. What's it worth 10k?
