Hartlepool in the 1970's Never that many fans there, little police presence, pockets of brainless locals looking for any unfamiliar faces to bottle and/or boot. Also, it was permanently freezing no matter what time of the year you went! Also, Bradford during the same period was extremely intimidating. Violence was commonplace during our fixtures with City at that time. It was seen as our main derby game and generated the most hostile atmosphere.
Grimsby! Remember a crazy day there, fans fighting on the pitch. Some brave(stupid) Grimsby fan actually jumped into the away end, one of the Grimsby players slid into the boards and was punched, fans using corner flag like a spear. Madness!!
Re: Could've sworn didnt we play them 2 boxing days in consecutive years away, im sure the one i went to we lost but i have slept since then.
Re: Hartlepool in the 1970's I remember an away game at Bradford. Possibly the FA Cup game in 1983. I was sat in the main stand with me dad. There was terracing in front of us and some of the Bradford City fans were spitting at people in the stands. If there's owt me dad doesn't like it's spitting. I've never seen him raise a fist to anyone before or since, but he's made of steel me dad and he's as strong as an ox after delivering coal all his life. He reached over two rows of seats, grabbed one of the main culprits by the throat and started dragging him up in to the stand. Five or six of his mates had to grab his legs to try to pull him back. It was a tug of war for quite a while and the lad was getting stretched like he was on the wrack. Me dad let go and they all went tumbling in to a heap on the terracing. The atmosphere wasn't pleasant then for the rest of the game.
I was there when the corner flag was used as a spear. It was Easter Monday 1995. A load of Barnsley fans and Grimsby fans were rolling about in the corner of the pitch then some ******* psycho picked up the corner flag and launched it in to the Barnsley end. We hammered them for 90 minutes but lost 1-0.
Have to agree with ayersome park boro fa cup went up Ont special mental. Mick Lester shoulda scored. Reyt laugh though
yeah, that was the one. One fat copper trying to control a full brawl! On the footballing side - spawny back heel had us beat :-(.
The only time I was beaten up At a football match was at Burnden Park, Bolton round about February/March 1982. I was set upon by about half a dozen of their 'fans' and ended up getting my glasses broken. We lost the game 2-1. Funnily enough, I've never found either the ground or town intimidating or hostile.
Cardiff away Friday night lost 2-0 I believe went on coach would let us off till 7.30 to go in ground more coppers than reds fans down there just remember hearing the coins land in the 'no mans land' area behind the goal! Awful!! Not a fan of brum too had coffee poured on me there but this year was ace! And the night round brum after was especially fun!
Re: The only time I was beaten up Grimsby was always a rough place to go, Middlesbrough in fa cup , Bradford city late 70s went on the special from tarn, walking from train station to ground was scary then when we got into the ground we were sharing behind nets with all the city idiots and not many cops about , had a good day at reading late 70s went on the special I think it was Boxing Day there was only about 60 on it about 20 of us went in their end happy days.
Re: The only time I was beaten up Bloomfield road this season. Pulled over by police for no reason, got left of the coach and had to get the train back with a lovely person of a hangover. Great day before that though!
Re: The only time I was beaten up Portsmouth when we won think 1-0 Derek bell scored, Drove a transit van down with 8 of us. Parked up on a side street, Few of the lads especially one had his colours on and a knitted sweater with all the names of players on (Kev). Said to him you going to wear a coat to cover that lot up, No he said, Okay where you lot going Southsea for some beers, right then I am going near ground for something to eat see you in ground, another bloke and his son came with me and we ended up in stands, with the majority of Barnsley fans to our left on the terrace (about 400) I see this fellow limping into the ground it was Kev the sweater was in tatters could see he had a black eye. After the match met up with them what happened, They got chased all up and down Southsea and set upon several times by Portsmouth fans. We had to go to a Police Station for statements as apparently the cops had apprehended several youths for the assaults, Kev did infact pick some out and was successful in having them jailed for 6 months, he went down twice to testify, Couple of years later we went to portsmouth again and sprayed painted on a garage Door was free so and so it was the name of the person Kev had testified against, he stuck to me like sh** to a blanket that day (no colors) We were kept in ground for almost an hour after the game had finished that day.
Coventry away last year was w@nk. I was hungover, spent two hours in a VW Golf with 4 other lads who were over 17 stone each, one being vegas_tyke who is 12 foot tall in the front with no leg room, little air and sweating my tits off. We parked at least 3 miles from the ground and walked in just in time for the game, spent 90 minutes watching ***** for them to score in the last minute and then the same back. Awful day.
sunderland, new years day in the mid 90's stood in an open terrace,it was ******* freezing and it pissed it darn for the full 90 minutes and we were ***** and lost 1 nil.Noticed a few mentioned grimsby as intimidating, well aye its rough as **** and i did once get locked up there but i always enjoyed our games with the codheads, always a top day out at grimsby.leicester could be a bit moody at filbert street especially if it was dark down them dodgy sidestreets.
I had never been so scared in all my life as I was at that match. Not until I got lost near St Andrews after the 4 0 play off win. Was bricking it every time I walked round a corner, fully expected that if any of their fans found me they would kill me. Getting sworn at and being pelted with stones by some inbred twelve year olds at Carrow Road is another "highlight".
i remember when tha got locked up at grimsby... nowt to do with you if i remember correctly, warnt it dangley dave having a pee and smashing his hand into a wall that got thi arrested...
was a great game this one. brilliant atmosphere, just as we pulled back into barnsley the team coach followed us up sheffield road towards oakwell.... always remember mad mel sat at the front with a silly grin on his face whilst we went mental on the coach!
