Yes. Without checking I think we finished below Huddersfield in around 1996 and last finished above Blackburn in around 1991 (they finished close to relegation the season bevore they sneaked up via the play offs). I don't think Bolton came up to the second flight until a couple of years after that.

we finished above Bolton and Blackburn in the same season, 1999/2000

I was actually going to say Derby County but we finished above them about 3 seasons ago

Blackburn were in the second tier 12/13 years ago. We beat them at Oakwell, Craig Hignett twice.

I am quite surprised we didn't didn't finish below Huddersfield in any of the 3 years we spent in League 1 before the year we came back up, especially as we nearly went down again in one of those years - were they in League 2 at the time?

Actually, come to think of it, are we counting the regular league season here only, because if we are then they finished above us in 2006 when we came back up, hence them being at home in the second leg of the semi-final of the play offs (one of my favourite ever away days).

It's late and you're making the question more tricky than it should be! I'm old school and still see the football league as being the 92 clubs. The answer is Arsenal by the way and, again without checking, I think we last beat them in the season we should have gone up instead of them (1914-15?).

Actually, your first guess, Accrington Stanley, is the answer to the opposite question. I.e. of all the current league teams that have beaten us (so again not including Crawley, Burton, etc) who do you have to go back the furthest to find a victory against us. Accrington last beat us, I think, in 1959-60. However, it's also true to say they haven't played us since 1959-60!

Yes, you're right - just looked it up - they finished 11th on 62 points that year.

Bolox, you're right, and it was Bolton, not Blackburn too. I shouldn't be doing this late at night and relying on my memory without being ar5ed to turn my computer on to check! Especially when I went to all that trouble to plot it all on spreadsheets in the first place. I should stick to asking Mr C pop questions about bands he's never been in, but then again there aren't many of those either!

I'll take that as being right by default then :) I thought Arsenal on the basis that (a) we didn;t beat them in the Premier League and (b) I am not sure but think they haven't been out of the top flight since they shafted us for promotion.

Hence my guess at Accrington - its all educated guessing this you know :)

Actually, nevertheless, it's still Huddersfield, I just couldn't remember the dates. They haven't finished above us since the promotion season, whereas every team in the Championship finished above us last season, apart from the other two promoted teams (Wednesday and Charlton), who last finished above us in 2009 and 2008 respectively.

The other one, Bolton/Blackburn, easy mistake to make. They're both from Lancashire, both begin with B and both have tw@ts as chairman.

Right, I'm off to bed and I promise that if I set any more questions tomorrow I will check my painstakingly compiled research first, before confusing Blackpool with Burnley or Northampton with Southampton!

Blackburn have been in this division much more recently than that, I remember us beating them something like 5-1 at Oakwell. Remember it as it was one of the few occasions where I sat in the North Stand - it was split between home and away at the time.

Our record away league victory is against Accrington Stanley, won there 9-0 in the 1930s I think!

Technically that Accrington Stanley went bust in 1962 in mid-season and the one in the league now was formed in 1968. Do they count as the same team?

If they don't, neither do we. We went bust and reformed as well.

Not after resigning from the league in mid-season and having a year with no club. The Accrington Stanley that exists now was a completely new club that happens to have the same name as the original. Its more like Wimbledon and AFC Wimbledon than the situation we (and plenty of others) have been through.
