He goes on as though this is the only factor stopping firms taking on. Sure, it is a consideration but if you have only just got the business to retain what you have ne mind taking more folks on...

Why are we obsessed with house building and saddling ourselves with mortgage debt ?

Mortgage debt that ****** things in the first place.

The difference now is that rather than the banks taking the risks and then the Taxpayer bailing them out, they now want their cake and to eat it...

Why not just lend direct to the individual?

They won't lend - either to individuals or businesses - it's gone from throwing money at people to hoarding it. At either end of the spectrum no account was/is taken of capacity to service the loan.

Banks now know they'll be bailed irrespective so get used to their risk averse/taxpayer funded safety net approach.

The banks have been told to re-capitalise their balance sheets by the government. That's why they are hoarding IMO.

RBS bigwig told me they were at a point beyond necessary in terms of cash held. They just didn't want to be exposed to too much unsecured lending - ie none at all....

Or maybe the are just shafting us by stringing the whole process of recovery out as long as possible so the powers that be can use it as an excuse to cut services, wages, job protection, sell owt that may be worth something to the private sector, abandon the poor/needy/ill/old etc, make people desperate so they will work for any wages (get rid of minimum wage) and any conditions and then fill the pockets of the wealth creators (their new term for rich robbing ba$t@rds) who would be nowhere if it wasn't for the ordinary people working for them and buying their goods.

Encourage the rich to work harder by giving them more money, encourage the poor to work harder by giving them less:rolleyes:

    *cough*

House building fueled the boom, joiners, brickies, plumbers, sparkies all tend to spend their hard earned and keep the economic cogs moving.

Russian and Yank merchant bankers speculating/frigging money markets to maintain their multi mullion pound champagne lifestyle got us in the **** (and now hold us to ransom and move cleverly in the corridors of Whitehall), not hard working JP. The construction industry IS the economy, lets crack on.

Yeah phrased badly. Over Inflated house prices and the associated 'apparent' wealth of those home owners helped fuel a credit based unsustainable 'boom'.

There's a massive incentive for taking work

Start at minimum wage and work your way up.

That should be the incentive, the desire to do better if given the chance (and the £20 a week).

The shame of the previous Labour govt

is that they never initiated a social housing adventure, they had every opportunity to restock the public housing levels run down by Thatchers Right to Buy.

Is nobody going to mention the Beer Duty Escalator being scrapped?

Positive news out of today. Although we still pay 40% of the whole of Europe's beer duty and only drink 17% of it.

Arise Sir Greg Mulholland - some great lobbying to achieve this.

300 pints over a year, one free pint courtesy of George Osborne. What more could you ask for?

Better than going up 2% more than inflation though hey? #BackThePub

    Re: *cough*

Until you appreciate that there is no difference with the three main parties, you will not comprehend UK politics.
Labour screwd up the country financially, and now have all the answers to remedy their fiscally inept policies (viz. selling gold reserves for next to nowt, embarking on PFIs that were going to cost the country for years to come; satisfying the ego of people like Blair by going to war with the enemy within (the Muslims) on spurious WMD, which were of course neither discovered prior to the war by Hans Blix and his crew, nor after the Iraq war, to name but three.
The Con/Lib alliance has proved to be totally incompetent. It promises that we will get this, that and the next thing, after the next election, which I very much doubt they will win. The result will be Red Ed, his cohort Balls etc. winning the election and the country sinking further into the mire.

A LOT TO LOOK FORWARD TO, I DON'T THINK.

Cameron and Osborne, two old Etonians and both millionaires will get 50 p tax relief in two weeks time. Any relief for public or private sector will be end of 2014. I am alright jack. The country is in the mire not because of Labour but because of Bankers who ran the debts up. They get big bonuses for doing it. It is not easy resolving the problem but Osborne has never had a job and the problem is way above his capability. He will. Get the sack shortly as the next election comes up. Cameron may go with him. Thought Milliband gave them a right going over, and they sat there squirming. He seems to be starting to look like a leader at last.

Re: Is nobody going to mention the Beer Duty Escalator being scrapped?

I could guess on at the very least 3,000 or so people out celebrating tonight.

Sounds like you'll benefit more than the rest of us :)
