Yes. But dyed in the wool Tories like Xerxes can't handle that.

You are right there's little or no difference. All subscribe to a greater or lesser degree to Freidmanist economics that should be as discredited as George...

But am I right in thinking cider duty is much lower than beer anyway? So as much as it's 2p, if he hadn't scrapped the beer duty escalator you probably wouldn't be mentioning it

I did think Cider duty had been brought in to line with beer over the last few years..a quick google suggests its about half, but the point I was making was that it was an opportunity missed to boost small scale production...increase the duty on producers over 5000 hl per annum..on a sliding scale like beer duty,it stimulates
job creation, small producers employ far more people to produce a barrel...almost always using UK grown ingredients with the knock on effect that has,and the added bonus is the product is usually of a higher quality.

But the 2p isn't going to stifle that opportunity too much? Not versus 35p on spirits and 10p on wine.

Understand what you're saying, but the duty is at a level that shouldn't limit small scale production. In fact, more and more ciders from small producers are appearing in the market all the time. Don't think the 2p will stop that, and to be fair I've never understood why cider and beer aren't classed as the exact same category anyway

My guess is that with only a couple of exceptions cider making was always regarded as a local cottage industry..the big multinationals having no interest until the last few years, but now its a multi billion pound industry, and the sad thing is that UK cider orchard acreage is miniscule today with the attendant loss of agricultural jobs that brought,as the multi nationals buy in juice concentrates from the worlds cheapest sources,it could have been a good opportunity to raise some serious extra revenue from the big conglomerates and give a shot in the arm to the rural economy.

But I'd disagree on that front.

I see more craft cider from the 'cottage' world now than ever before. It started to prove so popular the people behind The Sheffield Tap opened up a 'Cider Tap' outside Euston station in London.

You go to The Hop in Leeds and they regularly have a couple of real ciders on, and Beer Writer Pete Brown has been studying the history of cider for a new book and how different countries have different attitudes to it. Wales in particular has some phenomenal real ciders and perrys.

Re: Is nobody going to mention the Beer Duty Escalator being scrapped?

Shame it was just a PR stunt to disguise the cuts and reduced growth forecasts

Wasn't a PR stunt though because actually not many people really care.

The bigger picture to reducing the beer duty isn't as much the price of a pint, but how it will help the second (I think) biggest industry in the UK. Brewers being able to keep costs down and the pub being able to maintain being open is great for employment and for raw UK materials.
