Did you not go to the Watford game?

    Was a cracking atmosphere.

It's just started to get better and you're saying its a problem?

Starts well for 10 mins. If no goal it drops. We try keep it going. Some periods of silence recently

You'll probably guess what's coming..... Pint at half time can only help the Ponty

could be a lot better then it is, everyone loves to pick fault with the team, and where we need to improve even on the back of 2 wins, this is no different there's improvement to be had not just in numbers that turn up but also in the way they support the team when they do turn up

    Re: Safe standing

    totally agree.

when we had similar size crowds in the 80's with 90% of people standing there was always a great atmosphere at Oakwell, which resulted in us having
    a strong home record

the same problem can be said of most football grounds, with a few exceptions, like Stoke, Swansea, etc but they have near full grounds every week.

Acoustics of the ground are terrible, would improve with corners filled in and the West Stand being built. I'd imagine if the West Stand was the same as the East the atmosphere would improve considerably. Seem's very open Oakwell.

It always drops off this time of year, because people wear gloves which muffles the applause. :)

We do have a few Teenagers that sing in the top left of the ponty end. I appreciate their efforts but some of the songs they sing are really inappropiate. The Yorkshire Ripper one especially and a few others.

I think the acoustics of Oakwell are actually pretty decent.

Compare it so say the Etihad where it was shocking.

No it isn't. Its absolutely terrible, and does nothing to add to the atmosphere.

Part of the reason I think is that Barnsley fans seem to have very polarised views on how they want to support the team. Probably more so than other teams, we seem to have distinct groups. There are those who enjoy a drink, want to group together with mates and stand and sing... then you have the rest who are very content with sitting quietly and watching the action. Both preferences are fine with me, but when the former group is out-numbered massively by the latter group, atmosphere is difficult to create.

What doesn't help is the apparent disgust and intolerance shown by SOME supporters at anyone trying to get the crowd going. The lads in the corner of the Ponty who are more rowdy than the rest often get disparaging remarks thrown their way on here. I sit in the centre of the Ponty and when fans in the corner start to sing, people near me just gawp in amusement, almost uncomfortable anyone is disturbing the peace. That attitude needs to change if the atmosphere is going to improve.

Remember MK Dons, a great day and great atmosphere. But in actual fact, almost every bit of noise came from the one section to the left where everyone congregated for a party-style atmosphere. If those two hundred or so fans hadn't done that (or not been allowed to), the atmosphere would have been shocking because not a peep came from the right of me towards the centre. Atmosphere is generated by fans, individual ones intitially. The only way to improve that is to encourage, not discourage, those attempting to sing.

    Re: Safe standing

Really? l think the grounds too open to be good acoustically, sound is lost over the West Stand. I've heard a lot of comments from away supporters about being hardly able to hear the home crowd, sometimes in games where l've sat on the Ponty and thought the home crowd was in good voice. I think the NY stadium is good for acoustics after witnessing it in the friendly, both Sheffield grounds too, especially Bramall Lane, all closed in.

    Re: Safe standing

    That's a fair point actually.

The reaosn I think they're good is because I'm in the Ponty and it can sound loud even when theres not that many singing.

Same for away fans too can hear them even though there's not many of them, and when it's full it can be a right racket.

Lack of young people being able to afford to go. In my opinion anyway.

A few hundred drunk teenage/early-twenties singing and ****ing about and not being told to sit down, shut up would definitely help.
