The word on the market is that the new development has been cancelled due to lack of funding the existing market is to be tarted up.

Was up in Barnsley from London last weekend, and taking a walk round the town, I was struck by the feeling of decline. Walking on Saturday morning down The Arcade, at one time one of Barnsley's premier shopping streets, there were just 4 people. Five shops were closed and "To Let." Another couple also were shut. At the bottom of The Arcade, I looked across at the defunct SYCC building, what I consider to be the amongst worst of Seventies brutal architecture, and the concrete pebbledash of Cheapside. If ever there were constructions that need demolishing, there they are.
That part of the town centre is in need of massive regeneration, and soon.

Even within the market, there were quite a few stalls unoccupied, which would be unheard of in fairly recent times.

Where is the money for development coming from? Who knows, but I don't think tarting things up wll be the answer. Barnsley deserves better than what I saw last weekend.

With Trinity and Meadowhell relatively short journeys away there's no point in building more shops in Barnsley. Flatten the town centre 70's *****, develop a spaceous open market with a new facility for meat and fish, utilise the remaining buildings for what shopping will be required and make parking free. A genuine market town, not a failing wanabe. Do it Houghton, you know it makes sense.

I agree that free parking is a major part of the solution, restricted to perhaps 2-3 hours, to avoid commuters leaving cars in town all day long.
Something radical needs doing on the lines of what you suggest, including the demolition of the 70's ugly buildings. What you're advocating, with nthe large open market, seems very reminiscent of Tarn of the late Sixties, before the "progressive" councillors sanctioned its demolition.

Maybe have two categories of car park in town. Several larger car parks for workers with cheap all-day parking and smaller, closer car-parks with free parking for 2-3 hours and higher costs for longer stays.

Work is starting on the market, it was delayed because there were some arguments over who owned the land where the old carpet world building is, the council have had to stump up £10m to buy it from the government! God knows what that is all about but it's in the councils hands now and we should start seeing some activity in the next few months.

I hope that's right. I'll be proud of our town till the day I snuff it but we're in massive need of a makeover, people claim there's nothing to come into Barnsley for, if we gave people some nice shops, restaurants and a nice market then I'm sure we'd see the town centre boom again. When I walk through it gives off a negative vibe, the sort that drains any enthusiasm from your body, let's hope the council can get there acts together and give the good people of Barnsley a centre to be proud of again instead of housing every no good pissed up junkie and lay abouts.

It is mate, Debenham's have signed up to it long term, Odeon have got the cinema (6 or 7 screens I think), H&M and Nando's have also signed up, there's probably more as well.

The plans on the website are very detailed now, it has been scaled back somewhat from the original but should breath some new life in to the town and make it a viable alternative to Meadowhall.

They do need to do something about the parking though and make it free to shoppers somehow, they can't just make it free alltogether otherwise the council staff will just park there.

This is the only major new retail build in Europe this year.

With good reason, it;s not only the poor state of the economy but the fact that more and more people are buying everything on the internet, especially from Amazon where just about everything but food is cheaper than you can get anywhere else.

High Streets all over are in permanent decline.

I did read and here about those shops signing up but the past 6 months seem to have gone quiet. Am I right in believing the old ceag building (now demolished) is to be car park space? Once that's done is the market car parkbto be brought down?

I always thought that was what that Olympic Partnership was really about.

Not enough minorities in Barnsley for Barnsley Council's liking.

Re: Trinty new shopping opens today in Leeds -so whats happened to Barnsley's new s

Yeah that's right - some very detailed plans here: http://www.marketplacebarnsley.co.uk/plans.html

As far as I know the only thing holding it up was the land ownership issue - it was to do with the land being bought by a defunct quango for the purpose of using it for the new markets, when they ceased to exist the ownership transferred by default to the government, it's mad that Barnsley council have had to effectively buy their own land back, surely in most other parts of the country the goverment would have just handed it over.

It ant half dragged on this though, must be well over ten years ago since the original plan to rebuild the market was announced and I believe after a few early delays work was due to start in 2009 for completion in 2012! 2013 and the only sign of progress has been the demolition of the CEAG building.

On a positive perspective the demolition of that building can only be a sign that things are moving on, however slow they are. Do you you work for the council?

I do work for the council but not in anything to do with the markets, I only know what I've read in the Chronicle and on various construction websites.

To be honest Steve Houghton has said that the demolition of the CEAG building didn't mean they were any closer to starting the markets but that was before the land issue was sorted out so I would imagine they are a lot closer now.

If you email him he will tell you straight what the situation is, he has always replied to me and I don't know him personally.

Re: Trinty new shopping opens today in Leeds -so whats happened to Barnsley's new s

In my humble opinion I think the majority of people in Barnsley have lost all the motivation and ambition in life, it's a pretty harsh comment to make but the place oozes negativity. Every time you speak to someone all you hear is "there's no work out theer" or "this is ****" or "int life grim"

When all this recession kicked in me and my business partner said that we'd do everything in our power to shut away all negative ******. I'm no millionaire by a long shot but what I'm getting at is you've got to block out the negative vibes because all that does is grind you down. Aim high and believe in the impossible.

Your a long time dead so make most while your here.

I'll shut up no cause I'm rambling on
