Barnsley have missed out on £80,000 in TV money after South Yorkshire Police refused to let next month's game against Hull kick-off in the evening.

Sky TV wanted to show the April 27 clash but police said a 5.20pm start would make the fixture unsafe. The Tigers are chasing promotion and the Reds are battling relegation and a big crowd is expected for the Yorkshire derby which will be the last game at Oakwell this season.

Reds director Don Rowing said: "I would have thought that the crowd would have been lower with the game being on television but the police have made their decision and there's not much we can do about it.

"It's disappointing because the money from Sky would have helped the club but the police felt that there had been history between Barnsley and Hull in the past and that the game would be unsafe."

A police spokesperson said: "It's relevant to note that this is potentially a vastly important fixture for both clubs in terms of promotion and relegation. Emotions will clearly run very high and this will raise the threat of disorder. Public safety is our primary concern."

It's about time clubs told the police to **** off. Arrange the fixtures and let them get on with policing them. It's a joke that they can dictate like that.

This is probably because of whats happened with Huddersfield & Hull.

Police trying to control travelling fans because of expected trouble at a 5.20 game. One fan taking the police to court & a demonstration planned by FSF in Huddersfield town centre.

    S. Yorks police will have seen that and took the option of just blocking the time change.

If it's that highly charged I would have thought the police would have insisted on a noon kick off when the fixtures were first issued, although I do admit that the promotion/relegation situations does put a bit more feeling into it.

Police shouldn't have a say in the matter. They are paid really well to do their job and shouldn't be allowed to call the shots.

In real terms, that's 3 or 4 salaries down at Oakwell that could have protected for the coming year. You might think SYP would empathise with such things. Would they have said the same to the Sheffield clubs, I wonder.

But surely that means that they'll be more people there?

More people more chance of trouble?

Why does he always have this roll over and die attitude? It stinks.

he trotted it out when we played chelsea and gave them thousands more seats than they should have had 'oh theres nothing we can do, the police said so'. He says the same whenever anyone asks about away fans going in the west stand where we can charge them more and hand over the north to school kids 'oh the police said we cant, there's nothing we can do'.

Stand up for yourself Donald. Fight back. You are in charge of a multi million pound business so show some balls and make a fecking stand for once. Kick up a fuss. Do what leeds united did, what hull have done, what wigan did, what many other clubs do. Stand up for the club, argue your case and publicly force the police into a proper explanation or retraction.

Good decision, must be mental to allow this to kick off at 5.20pm there was trouble a couple of year ago and they smashed the WMC up, they'll be bringing a lot more this time round.

It has cost the tax payers more than 80k to mop up after the last couple of jull visits. They are renowned fir bringing trouble. By the way, don does stick up for the club in the meetings, but at times it comes down to public safety not just the match.

He must just be really crap at giving statements to the press then because in his statements he never says that he has argued with the decisions or tried to get them changed.

Out of interest why is 3pm any safer than 5:20pm on sky?

Less time in the pubs, less likely that hull fans will be in town centre at same time as shoppers and less chance of them staying in town centre pubs after. Also more resources available round south yorks I think.
