I think that he could have done. Your forgetting, there were no working time regulations back then and a "day" might have had a different meaning back then.
I'm a Christian, but probably fall into the lapsed category. I wouldn't say I believe in a God as such anymore, but I certainly believe that 'belief' in something helps a lot of people. Each to their own. I believe in Barnsley FC.
.............does anybody actually still believe in religion...............yes I do This world of ours is too beautiful to just be dismissed as an accident
Yup! I think that just about sums up religion. If you want to believe, then believe. If you don't, then don't. Let's all get on with life with or without any fighting over what is an unwinable arguement either way.
Child abuse of any description is terrible, and its cover up a scandal. But lets remember that it occurs in all walks of life wherever adults have access to children, a sad but true state of affairs. The Church, like all human institutions is full of all kinds of people, good, bad and indifferent, and like all human institutions was slow to respond to how paedophiles "work" but has now put in place safeguarding policies which are second to none, at least in this country - can't speak for elsewhere. We need to be very careful that the agenda of reporting and sensationalising these abuses doesn't lead to the assumption that it doesn't occur elsewhere, or is somehow more prevelant in the Church, because it isn't, in fact your child is in more danger alone with a teacher or police officer than a Priest, not that Priests are allowed to be alone with children anymore. Those Bishops who covered it up were acting out of ignorance, but also self-preservation for the supposed good name of the Church but they should still be punished, some have, some haven't.
But I was brought up as a kid going to church, my parents took me and we had to go until we were 16, once we were at our 16th birthday it was up to us. I think it provided me with a good morale grounding, not saying you don't get that elsewhere, but I do think (maybe didn't at the time) that it did a lot of good. I actually continued going util just before my 18th birthday but that was mainly due to a lass who went to the church as well! I don't agree with folk baptising kids because, "it's the thing to do" unless they themselves are church goers, same goes for getting married in church. Baffles me when I've been invited to a christening and I've said "oh, I didn't realise you were religious" and they say they aren't! I've refused to be a god parent on the grounds of what you have to say and promise.
What makes you think Chrisians believe God is "a man with a big beard" watching everything we do? Ever met a christian who told you that? SOME Christians choose to believe in the creation story, most do not, and take it as an allegorical story.
Hmm, You seem to be supporting both sides here. You quite rightly say that any sort of child abuse whether sexual or phisical is unacceptable. And yet you also say that any Bishops who covered it up were just acting in ignorance. FFS How ignorant have you got to be to know that sexual abuse against anyone is so wrong and should not be tollerated. Has the pope or the new pope come out and personally critisised the offending priests who were abusing kids? The silence from the vatican is deafening on this one.
I believe in science and the conservation of energy, but not religion. However, I'd go to church if they had a jumbotron screen and a bar at the back.

Except 'human' values predate religion. And we live in a secular society and it isn't too bad. Except when God told Tony Blair to support George W Bush. We weren't secular then. And we weren't very nice either.
even if it int true about god,its certainly true about easter bunny, for def,100%.I've seen his footprints for a start when I used to go to Barnsley Road Infants at wombwell
Compassion, pity and charity as we understand them are not objects found in nature, we should remember that we are the inheritors of a social conscience whose ethical grammer would be very different if it hadn't been shaped by Christianity's mora premises.
Stuff like the crusades and the Christian inquisition? That sort of compassion, pity and charity? I know what's right and wrong. I know compassion and pity and charity. I have a moral compass and know how to treat people right and it has nothing to do with religion or God. It's because I'm a human being.
Actually a lot of people due and get a lot of comfort from it, each to their own as far as I'm concerned If people want to believe and it helps them good for them, what does it matter? (Obviously unless they are a religious nutter hell bent on starting another war based on religion)
