In all honesty, (and possibly much to my discredit)...there is virtually no-one...

...I have ever wished ill of (live and let live is my mantra!) but in the case of Thatcher I make an exception. As far as I am concerned 'The wicked witch is dead'. Any good she did (and in fairness she got one or two things right in the early days) was completely outweighed by the legacy she has left to our society.

You could argue she was a product of her time as she was not alone in espousing the 'greed is good culture'. What DOES set her apart though she had the strength of character, and influence to become a force for good. Instead she became a leading light in privatising everything she could get her government's hands on, preached survival of the fittest, destroyed the manufacturing base of the country and practised a divide and conquer approach to everything e.g. 'the enemy within'

Britain as a nation in the short term did 'improve' -( if you regard financial wealth as an improvement) but at a far greater cost. She epitomised the phrase "knowing the cost of everything and the value of nothing!" mentality
The 'Me-me-me culture has thrived ever since and the obsession with qualifications etc, particularly in the public sector jobs which have become more about people who think "how much can I earn" rather than people who see it as a vocation. One of the reasons nursing and caring for example has suffered is many people see it more of a rewarding career rather than a vocation. People skills should be more important than paper qualifications. Yes they should be suitably rewarded but the emphasis should be on recruiting people who want to care for people not just get a pay packet at the end of the month.

As I said, tonight, I will be raising a glass not to the Life of Thatcher but to her demise.

Fortunately being in Italy I will be able to avoid the eulogising and sycophantic establishment and press coverage her death will create up to and including her funeral.

Britain unfortunately will not recover simply because she is no longer around. The legacy will take much longer to eradicate - if ever.

    Sums it up nicely.

The zeal with which she destroyed traditional industries and thus lives and communities in order to weaken the Unions is her legacy.

Not celebrating that she's dead, it's just not in me, I just wish the ramifications of her actions would die too.

    My sentiments exactly

Like to think of myself as a decent person who wouldn't wish ill on someone else.

But in her case I'm happy to make an exception.

Thank you for summing it it up so succinctly

I completely agree with everything in your post Tekkytyke but also lets not forget that the working classes, most of whom hate her with a passion, weren't too bothered by her policy of selling off social housing for a fraction of their real value, a policy that has meant that generations since have had a key an essential option in housing taken away from them.

She's the only person I've ever genuinely hated.
