I've not seen the race myself yet so this isn't a post with a spoiler in or anything. In qualifying yesterday the subject of drivers not putting in a time in Q3 was brought up with Brundle saying that they need a way to make the drivers do a lap as it isn't exciting for viewers to see Vettell sat in the pitlane to save his tires. He also said that he had no idea how to achieve this. So does anyone have any suggestions on how you could force drivers to put a time in in Q3 if they get that far? My suggestion is that it should be in the rules that like how you have to be within 107% (I think) of the pole sitter to even qualify for the race then Q2 should have a time of say 106% and Q3 1054% and if you don't set a time within those times then you have to start from the pit lane (or back of the grid). the 105 and 106%'s are just examples, i've no idea what would be reasonable. What do you think? Workable?
Not seen the race either will watch it on the BBC later but one easy solution springs to mind - unless rain affected the top 10 have to set times faster than the 11th man set in Q2 - if not they drop back down the grid to where the time would have put them - no time at all and start from the back so lets say hypothetically in Q2 11th place did a 1 min 33 secs and 14th was a 1 min 34.5 and the 10th in Q 3 does an installation lap of 1min 34.6 they would start 15th no time at all and they start either last or in last place after Q2
I can't for the life of me work out why an ex employee of a team who left the sport might be bitter about the sport his employer pulled out of doing him out of a job. It's like you continually slating Barnsley after you were banished from the town and onto a floating windmill in the middle of the north sea for being a nasty little tw@t
I'm not sure if that's entirely fair though, you're almost getting punished for not being able to beat your lap time (if you're in say 8th or 9th). You might have over achieved to get in to Q3, and could end up back in 14th/15th. It would force them to set times in Q3 though.
That's the simple answer Just give em qualifying tyres to guarantee flat out qualifying and let them chose what tyres they want to start on for the race. I can't really see what the intrigue is with the current setup anyway. The suggestions above regarding 107% times and Q2 times do have the problem that they run the risk of penalising Q3 qualifiers. It would be so easy for a driver to mess his lap up and end up rocketting down the order. Especially if it started raining. You'd end up with the Q3 drivers starting at the back of the grid. The whole tyre situation needs re-evaluating. If the drivers are only racing at 80% for tactical reasons then they've lost their edge that makes them the elite.
