I don't get it. Why would you want to stand when you can sit down. With me going to the u18 and u21 matches i stand a lot at them and i just don't get it. I see people in there twenty's never mind the guys in there 60's plus struggling to walk after including my self a few times if it's a little bit cold.
You obviously never went to Oakwell when you could stand then. In the late 80s when I first started going the atmosphere was always cracking. That was with 5-6,000 people in a ground that held well over 30,000. In those days we averaged far less than we do now, anything in excess of 8,000 was considered a "bumper crowd". It must have been really, really intimidating for away teams, as our home record showed. Even when we had very mediocre teams, a defeat at Oakwell was a pretty rare thing when I was a kid.
If you tell people that they have got to sit, there are always some that will (on a matter of principle) insist upon standing.
You haven't really experienced football until you have been standing with 30,000 + at Oakwell. The young uns will never know what that's like. Plus there were always seats at Oakwell if you wanted them, in the posh upper west.
I was never around for all standing matches. Gutted about it. I always stand to watch at matches now, up at the back so i'm not blocking anyone. Standing creates a much better atmosphere. Have you never seen The Yellow Wall at Dortmund? I think it creates a better atmosphere, and I like many, many others prefer to stand to watch football. What's wrong with wanting to do something differently to what you do?
I like standing up, you like sitting down. Not too hard to understand really. I pay the same ammount as you do, so I should have a choice wether I want to sit or stand IMO. A place where other like-minded people can do in a safe environment is the way forward.
Kinda agree with Hemsworth. But standing is sometimes a good laugh. Peterborough away last season was one of the best away days ever, made even better by the standing aspect.
Hemmsy a lot us on here stood up for decades before all-seater rules were brought in and I do miss the buzz of standing in a big crowd when the atmosphere was electric - you just couldn't beat it. I can understand your post as you've never known any different but for many of us standing up at football holds a lot of very pleasant memories.
It's a bit of a poor show if you're in your early 20s and standing for 2 hours takes it out of you. Get out running lad.
The atmosphere is definiteley better...you can move around a bit for a different view..and it's easier to stay warm in the cold weather..beats sitting all day long.
I agree. I class myself as disabled (not enough to warrant being in the disabled stand) but have mobility problems, Its not an issue at home matches but at away matches I invarably find that the people in front of me stand. The amount of abuse I get when I ask them to sit down is unbelievable to such an extent that I have stopped going to away matches. If people want to stand fine but it will take the clubs and authorities to sort this. Make a standing area for fans who want to and a sitting area for fans who want to then everybody would be happy and I might strat going to away matches again and supporting my team. Sitting down at football does not make me less of a fan!
Seems obvious that if want to stand choose a place near the back. Hate sitting as you can't clap or sing without nudging someone or bursting eardrum of person in front
Exactly. It's not right on people having their view blocked because people want to stand, especially if it's for medical reasons. If not creating a a 'safe standing' area with rail seats, then the next option is to have a recognised standing area so people know not to go their if they want to sit and then standing can be monitored in other parts of the stand. Imo, like.
