Town of Barnsley is 75,000 but the Metropolitan Borough which swallows up the towns of Hoyland, Penistone, Wombwell etc is 240,000. Comparing like for like before all this local government re-organisation crap, Leeds City was always round about 500,000 compared to Barnsley's 75,000

Borough 226,000, Town Centre 70,000 or so

226,000 is the catchment if you like as this is directly comparable with how the population of a city is stated.

I believe, and I'm sure someone more in the know may correct me, that that question is not as easy to answer that it seems. If you think of Barnsley town (as an urban area - forgetting all the pit villages) then I think the population is approximately 70-80K. However, when you think of Barnsley as a 'council area' (there's probably a better term than that) then the number is approx 230K. Don't take this as gospel though. I always thought he population of Leeds was around the 550k mark though.

Re: Borough 226,000, Town Centre 70,000 or so

The Borough of Barnsley (75,000) wasn't just the town centre - it included Athersley, New Lodge, Worsbrough Common, Stairfoot and Ardsley. Places like Worsbrough Bridge, Dodworth, Birdwell were in the old West Riding and didn't pay any rates to Barnsley. Wombwell, Hoyland, Royston, Penistone were separate towns in their own right.

Leeds population is based upon the metropolitan, just like every other population. Barnsleys population is Barnsley central, the area. Just like Leeds has a Leeds central and London had a central area which is scarcely populated.

No idea where the 75000 comes from for Barnsley as going by every other town and City the population is the total area of that town. Like Manchester covers Greater Manchester.

We have this conversation every other fooooking week

If Barnsley Council empty your bins then you live in Barnsley..............which has a population of about 240,000
Leeds has a population of about 750,000

So if you want to argue with a Leeds fans just say this:
Leeds has 3x the population of Barnsley so if Barnsley get 10,000 fans then Leeds should therefore get 30,000 fans (which they dont)
Plus, Leeds has a long history of being in the top league and having success so this should easily attract another 10,000 fans on top of that. So Leeds should be getting about 40,000 fans per home game (which they dont)
Plus.............if the announcer at the Leeds home match asked everybody to leave the ground that has no connection with Leeds (i.e. not from Leeds and has no direct relatives from Leeds) then that 20,000 crowd that they get now would probably go down to 5,000. Because the majority of fans that watch Leeds are not Leeds people.
That is to say.............Leeds is not a football loving town
    Barnsley is

so from that it seems as if Barnsley are better supported than Leeds

    Barnsley

    Pop 230k crowds 9K - 10K that's 4% - 5%

    Leeds

    Pop 750K crowds 20K - 21K that's 3% - 4%

so per capita Barnsley are better supported than Leeds

Tell thi birds Fatha if leedshite had to rely on support from the people of leeds they would pull less than us.most of their support come from the rest of Yorkshire and beyond.also ask him about their home crowds in the mid 80's.

your right we do have this convesartion a lot probably because you use the same rhetoric every time.
your argument that if Barnsley council empty your bins your in barnsley is probably right.
but that has never been the natural or historic catchment of bfc.
indeed places such as hoyland, thurnscoe, goldthorpe etc have been in the past big sheffield wednesday areas as they were towns in they're own right and had no affinity with bfc whatsoever. the fact that westminster changed that does not mean they automatically supported bfc.there is still a big wendy support in these and other places although we have cut into it these last 40/50 years or so. so to compare all 250,000 people in the borough as potential bfc fans is wrong whereas leeds and sheffield boundaries have not altered much and by and large still have the same catchment, which is smaller than ours per population in real terms.

I know you may not want to upset things but just point out that per capita Leeds has the highest percentage of scum in English football..that should keep him happy if he's a real Leeds fan.

Every ward in Barnsley was a town in its own right when we had the local councils.........I'm old enough to remember before the district council was formed
But if Donny-tyke starts spouting about Goldthorpe and Thurnscoe and Wendy fans and Hoyland also having its own council.......then I would imagine that Donny-Tykes father in law is going to stand there open mouthed stareing at him
    Best keeping it simple

As for a large percentage of football fans in the Barnsley District supporting the Blunts, Wendy and Leeds.........thats exactly why I dislike those clubs and wish they would all go out of business
Those three clubs are taking supporters and hence money that really ought to be going into the WELL
But I dont dislike the genuine Sheffielders and people from Leeds that support their home town clubs

You have also got to think of what's around us what I meen is one reason we get low crowds is we have the two Sheffield sides Rotherham Doncaster and Barnsley all probably same distance from me were I live, we're as someone in leeds who wants to follow someone only really has leeds localy

    Barnsley ave 10,207 pop 231,200 - 4.41%
    Leeds ave 21,572 pop 751,500 - 2.87%

1 city club, thats terrible support.
