Sheffield Wednesday: Put up or shut up over Chris

Sheffield Wednesday today challenged South Yorkshire rivals Barnsley to put their money where their mouth is over striker Chris O’Grady.

The Reds reiterated their desire to capture O’Grady, who has a year left to run of his contract at Hillsborough, yesterday.

The 27-year-old was a big hit during his loan spell at Barnsley last season, scoring six times in 16 outings as the Reds staved off the threat of relegation.

Reds boss David Flitcroft has indicated he wants to bring in “four or five” reinforcements over the summer, claiming O’Grady will be a transfer target.

But Wednesday manager Dave Jones has told The Star: “Chris is still our player.

“Barnsley do an awful lot of talking but they never actually do anything. What we will do is wait and see if they come to us.”

Jones has no regrets over his decision to let O’Grady join Barnsley on a temporary basis in January.

“I had to move him out to bring others in,” he insisted. “I brought three players in and I think that’s quite good business.”

When asked about O’Grady, Flitcroft said: “I would love to bring Chris back but he’s not ours. We’ll be working on it. I think he’d want to come here.”

Dave Jones is a miserable arse, but he's right. If we want Chris O'Grady, which we obviously do, then make Sheffield Wednesday an offer for him. Otherwise we may find some other club nips him and buys him while we're just talking about him.

It's cos he ended up looking a lovely person for not getting the performances out of COG that Flicker and the M's did.

I can't stand Dave Jones and him thinking he has the ace cards is just making him even harder to tolerate.

I very much doubt he said that to be honest.

barnsley not been doing much talking about O'Grady to be fair, Flicker mentioned him yesterday because he was asked about him. He said they will do something in the next couple of weeks.

    that report just seems daft

If the quote & reporting is accurate

Then his comments, attitude, style and approach is ignorant at best. However, as it's from the Star, I'd give Jones the benefit of the doubt.

Sounds like a man under pressure from fans to make signings and under pressure from the owner to raise funds, because Mandaric won't be dipping too far into his pocket.

Make the whiny scouser sweat....150k max.

I suspect this brinkmanship will take most of the summer. We want him cheap, they want rid but don't need to sell immediately.

Dave Jones is still a massive wnaker though.

Just another reason for me to hate that odious moron. Even if the report isn't accurate and he didn't say it, I still hate the whining git with a passion.

If it was SWFC wanting a BFC player this article would have been written slightly different.....

In theory it should be an easy negotiation......SWFC want shut and BFC want to buy.

BFC have a strong position as they know COG wants to sign for us, so it will come down to fee.......£300 K I think.

    And........

    Dave Jones is a tw@t

Dave Jones speaking sense for once. If a club had openly mentioned wanting one of our players but hadn't made a bid for the player we'd be annoyed too. If we want COG so much make a bid for him and don't go dragging our feet about it.

Just because it's Sheffield Wednesday I don't think we should be playing hardball over O'Grady or running down the club or their manager. Jones is right, Bobby Hassell singing 'CO'G is a Red' is great fun for us, but just a lot of hot air from where they're standing. We should put a firm and fair offer in pronto, they will probably be happy to recoup the £350k they claim to have spent on him. Any dallying is just letting other clubs in by the back door and 6 goals and 4 assists in 16 games is a million pound footballer to those that have it.

Wendies spent nowhere near 350k...as I said earlier 150k max. Or wait for out of contract strikers to become available.

That's the best way to lose him, 150k for a ratio 20 goals a season? Dream on. You are letting emotion get in the way of business, 350k is cheap for that level of performance.

£300k is peanuts. £150k is an insult.

To be fair, it's got **** all to do with Dave Jones.

Flicker said we'd already spoken to Paul Aldridge (Wednesday's version of The Don).

Jones is playing up to the Wednesday fans, and fair play to him for that.

Still a lovely person. Ask his wife.
