My opinion - won't please any daily mail readers

Hello.

I grew up in Barnsley from 1967 (aged 3) to 1987, when I moved up to Leeds due to work.

My schools were Wilthorpe Juniors / Seniors & Holgate.

The only non caucasian person at Holgate in my time (out of approx 800 people) was a lad called Edmund Chung, whose parents had a Chinese Restaurant.

Despite this as kids we used to call kids "Coon" and various other racist & sexist terms, like "Puff", without having a clue what they were about.

At matches I saw players like the amazing Cec Pod & later in a Barnsley shirt Winston Campbell get monkey noises & worse.

This is the racism of the ignorant.

I have now lived in the Hyde Park / Headingley area of Leeds for 25 years. It is an area that in terms of permanent residents is about 60% asian, mostly muslim.
(The mass is mostly middle class white kids who make up the student population).

During this time I have never been threatened by a muslim, despite me living somewhat of a rock & roll lifestyle.
They cut my hair, drive me back from clubs, feed me & generally have a laugh with me when I'm tanked up, even though its against their religion.

I have to ask who is open minded & who isn't?

The biggest issue for me is to stop the Academy / Faith schools approach, that will attract people of the same religion all going to the same school, where they get the same dogma stuffed down them & perpetrates the same ignorance. There is nothing to be feared from multiculturalism, if kids all learn together, across faiths.

There, it's out.

On a similar note, in our small circle of friends in school we had a kid who was 50% British and 50% St. Kitts and Nevis-ish(no idea what you'd call them) But his nickname in our small group was, "n*gger" and between close friends he's kept this nickname(through his own choice) in to his mid 20's. Does that make me a racist?

 

Yes, a white bloke in a suit in Westminster said so. Probably.

 

Whilst the Daily Mail does over-sensationalise (is that a word?) things, the rest of the media seems to just tow the party line, as it were. I do wish there was an in between media that just told things how it is because no-one really does at the minute. No-one seems to be interested in the truth, which seems to be somewhere in the middle of the spectrum of views.

exactly, I've lived my life based on if I like somebody I like em, irrespective of race, creed sexual orientation
and by the same criteria if I don't like em then tough.

It is a problem though that if you do upset somebody of another nationality /sexuality the extremists amongst them are always likely to play the race/homophobic card which could easily drop you in the mire especially with the law who seem to take political correctness to stupid degrees.

there are radicals in every religion, and they have killed for every faith. I believe that religion can be as Evil as it is good
