Ironically this article is from the BBC, which I loathe, but maybe if it was suspended for a few years (to save the awful amount of cash it wastes) and built back up with different people and different ideals it wouldn't be so bad.

BBC gives us nothing we can't get for nowt from a commercial broadcaster...entertainment and news are all on demand these days and less and less of that is consumed via the aerial on the chimney (even though that provides a lot more than it used to), why do we need the BBC propaganda machine any more?

which is the majority unfortunately...most other broadcasters go out of their way to give a balanced view, the BBC reckon they're always right.

yes there is some interesting stuff on BBC4 and it's refreshing to see programming which isn't just made for ratings, but that doesn't excuse the rest of the rubbish they indoctrinate the public with.

I'd happily live with just BBC TV, radio & websites.

    Best 15 quid I spend a month.

Good grief, do you watch ITN? Its awful, bias everything what a good balanced reporting lacks. The BBC has its faults of course, but its way better than most of the other alternatives.

There's good stuff on Bbc3, bbc4, sky arts, sky Atlantic, discovery.

it's not either or. There's good and bad on bbc and commercial channels.

to be honest the things i have enjoyed watching most recently have been on neither, but imported dvds recommended by a mate. No, not "special interest" before you ask!

    Yawn! Another anti-BBC post.

Personally think the BBC do a great job, just been watching Newsnight. To say they don't do anything that a commercial broadcaster does is, in my opinion, incorrect.
Just with the news and current affairs - Newsnight, Andrew Marr, Question Time etc. We get high quality, in depth debate and discussion, not even Sky News match them in the in depth stuff, not to mention NO ADVERTS! I think that it should not be allowed for any news channel, or news programme, to carry commercials. Every time I switch onto Sky News or CNN it's either in a commercial break or goes to one a couple of minutes later.

Me too. Having said that, ITV are really getting their act together when it comes to drama. Scott and Bailey is ******* mint.

Not seen that, but enjoyed Broadchurch and Lightfields amongst others. There used to be a time that I'd avoid anything if it was on ITV but they're doing some decent stuff.

One of the things that did it for me was, on September 11th, 2011, they reported that building 7 (not touched by a plane, just a fire on one floor) had collapsed half an hour before it actually collapsed.

They then commissioned a documentary, partly due to people asking questions about why they had done this, but in the end made little reference to this building - instead they decided to ridicule anyone who chose to challenge any of the events of that day. I'm not into conspiracy theories by the way but there are some questions about that day which no-one in an official capacity is prepared to touch, maybe because they are wondering themselves.

Of course I'm not saying I realised this at the time it was all happening, but they've never explained why they reported the collapse before it happened and say they have lost the tapes (although others have tapes of it). This has made me scrutinise a lot of the things they say on their news channel and they seem to be operating on a totally different plane. The rest of their programming is generally rubbish as well, I used to enjoy The Sky at Night but they've dumbed that down so much it's not worth watching.

Too hard to explain it all to be honest, I've bored many a person over this stuff in the local.

Heartily recommend it. There's been three series now and each one has been better than the last. The acting from the three lead women is superb. It's brilliant.

Big thumbs up from me for Broadchurch too.

Like you I never used to bother with ITV, but I can't fault some of their recent dramas. Both the BBC and ITV are finally catching up to the quality that American producers like HBO and the like are capable of. TV as cinema.

Have you seen Boss starring Kelsey Grammer? Excellent with an unbelievable performance from Grammer.

What you doing in this thread? You should be sorting out the ruckus you've caused when you posted an article from The Star. What were you thinking?

Agree with you entirely. Oh how I wish I could have more great-quality advert-free news coverage and political debate programmes over here - I only get it from BBC World News and BBC Canada.

I sometimes try to watch CNN or Headline News and there are more adverts than news coverage. It's pathetic.

Then you've got the BBC webpages - isn't it one of (if not THE) favourite internet sites in the world? BBC radio 2 is also the best radio station, IMO.

    Long live the BBC!
