Hey, I've just recently bought my first car; a renault clio 1.2 16v expression 5dr on a 51 plate.

I was wondering if there was any cheap upgrades that could upgrade performance and cosmetics of it as it looks abit tired and is abit slugish.

    Thankyou

A service for the engine and some tlc and elbow grease from thissen on the bodywork and interior. Bring it back to stock before deciding whether to fit Carlos Fandango wheels and join the chavelcade of souped up motors whizzing around the supermarket car parks.

Yeah seriously forget performance, cars like that weren't designed for it so you're never gonna find any no matter what you do (filters, intakes, exhaust etc.) I considered it with my first car (Arosa 1.0), there's stuff you can do with ECU's and what not but then you risk reliability and economy for virtually no gain. Not to mention the insurance costs and denting the resale value. Don't touch it! My advice would be to learn to drive it faster, check tyre pressures regularly and keep it well serviced. As for cosmetics, yeah there'll be plenty of replacement parts knocking about at salvage yards for cheap prices. Happy motoring :)

Standard is best. Don't follow the crowd and make yourself and your car look ridiculous.

One of my old bikes didn't seem too hot on the fuel consumption, took the air filter out and half a bird came out with it! Seemed a lot better after that :D

What do you mean by learning to drive it faster? Lower gears?

'learn to drive it faster'. great advice. definitely never drive under 50mph, and preferably never above 2nd gear

Yes, make sure you're using all the revs in the correct gear.

Try sticking to the speed limit and you'll successfully see yourself buying your 2nd car in a few years. Sorted.

A blue Magic Tree 'New Scent' air freshener

If the trim/bumpers are faded then Autoglym Bumper and Trim gel is brilliant and makes them look brand new

Autoglym Super Resin polish - this is great at getting rid of any oxidization/fading to the paintwork

Turtle Wax Interior1 is a great upholstery/carpet cleaner and will make your interior look/smell great

Changing the fuel filter (pick one up on ebay for £6/7) might help if its slugish

    Driving Faster 101

    1) Avoid going up hills
    2) Try to drive with the wind (you may end up nowhere near where you intended but at least you'll get there quickly)
    3) Shed weight, stop eating all the pies, fatty
    4) Refuse to give anyone a lift

Just make sure its service properly to start with. My car feels much better with some oil in it and the tires pumped up.

Watch for the airbag light coming on, its a common fault in them old Clio's, my brothers does it all the time, he just fiddles around with the wires under the passenger seat and it goes off again.
