Would you ever be against the naming rights to Oakwell being sold?

Ben Mansford made reference to it in his interview so I would assume it's something he would look to do if an opportunity came along.

I do like the fact that we are amongst a dwindling number of teams to retain their original stadium name but at the same time it's got to be a good earner.

The Bet365 Stadium anyone?

 

I'd rather we didn't but if we were talking very big money it would be silly not to consider it.

Most would still call it Oakwell anyway.

 

Yeah it doesn't really harm us, the sponsor exposure comes from references to the stadium by the media.

I don't know what the going rate is for stadium naming in the Championship, I'd say it was more significant than shirt sponsorship as how often do you hear the media mention the logo on the shirt? Pretty much never, although it is more visible. Anything between £300,000-£500,000 per year for naming the stadium and I think the club should seriously think about it. As long as it's not someone like quick quid as they seem to be getting knocked back left right and centre in sponsorship deals and rightly so.

I'm fine with it, but I'd be tempted to hold out for a nationally reknowned company to make it worth the hassle.

 

Yeah. I'd do it. like Blivy said, I'd still call it Oakwell anyway, but the media can call it whatever they want if we get some serious coin for the privilige

 

Sell the naming rights but bring back the old Oakwell badge for the shirts - everyones a winner

Not over keen on this but it only makes a difference in the papers and on the telly (plus a great whacking sign) , it would still be Oakwell to Barnsley fowk
If the money is right..............can we afford not to...............everyone else is doing it..........

If we're as far behind on budgets with the most other teams then it seems an obvious avenue to explore.

Don't get me wrong a lot of the larger/national firms probably don't see a natural association with Barnsley but I'd like to think we have a reputation for doing things the right way and are still relatively successful. The Championship is fairly well known around the world so the potential for exposure is massive.

 

I think it'll be (The BetFred Oakwell Stadium) when it dose happen, and people will just call it oakwell anyway.

while claiming that 'the championship is where we deserve to be' then we aren't allowed to object to anything the powers that be have to do to keep us competitive at this level imho.

 

I get the money arguments but it's not for me. Every part of football seems to be for sale at the moment but I love the fact we still have our traditional name for our ground. Oakwell is Barnsley, it fits us well. Everyone knows Oakwell means Barnsley FC. I hear all the different sponsors names for grounds nowadays... (Pro-Star stadium, B2Net Stadium, Globe Arena)... anyone could play there. Looking down the leagues, a lot less clubs than you'd think have sold naming rights to their grounds and I wouldn't want us to be one of the growing number.

Not be long before that lot down the A61 are moaning about the lack of transfer money being spent this summer (with them being massive and that) , and they where taking the moral high ground about turning down very good shirt sponsorship money in the early summer, you can't have it both ways, some people want there cake and eat it.

I think stadium sponsorship works better with new grounds that haven't established a name (from the sponsors perspective).

Having said that, if a company wants to chuck some money at it (and I'd only accept national or international organisations... better to have a well known company spending larger amounts even if it takes 2 or 3 years to attract them than get a small sponsor which blocks a large wealthier company getting involved.

As many have said, it's still Oakwell to Reds fans and would never be anything else.

Yes, I'm against it. Branding of a stadium is usually wrapped up in the expenses of building it. It doesn't represent tangible income to a lot of clubs, it just absolves a bit of debt.

 

I'd rather it wasn't renamed, but a big chunk of cash would persuade me otherwise. I'd always refer to it as Oakwell though, just as I still call the Ponty the, er, Ponty.

 

The Cash Converters Dickie Bird Stadium would do would'n it?

 

If the money is right I don't care what Oakwell would be renamed. Andrex Stadium? Viagra Stadium? Home fans would still call it Oakwell and Lord Flicker would get a better budget. We aren't in a position to turn down possible revenue incomes. Anyway my uncle still says Huddersfield Town play at Leeds Road even though their new ground has been called Kirkless Stadium, McCalpine Stadium, Galpharm Stadium and now John Smiths Stadium.
