I can't understand the reasoning for building another supermarket 1/4 from Tesco. Also why the f.uck have they opened a Greggs at Stairfoot
saturation of the market place, but they create jobs so get encouraged to open, thats why we've got supermarkets all over the place its just a shame that b&q stairfoot couldn't be changed for 200 engineering or manufacturing jobs ie, something that promotes real growth.
It was largely accidental or rather unfortunate. They had been applying for planning permission for a bigger site for years when the only B&Qs in the area were the small one near asda and a small one in rotherham. They spent millions applying to build one at Stairfoot and then whilst this was happening they bought something like 20 sites off Homebase, one of which was the unfinished cortonwood site. That opened and then not long after they finally got the planning permission for Stairfoot. The problem they had then was that they'd already spent a huge sum of money on the stairfoot applications so to abandon it was a bit foolish, they also had already committed to paying for a massive redesign of the roundabout (though I think some of that came from funding) so they decided to carry on with the opening but always had the backup of being able to offload the store to someone else in the future. They tried selling to Tesco to try to get them to move a few hundred yards but Tesco decided to just expand where they were instead. They also tried to sell to ikea but that fell through.
I suspect that that might be someone who has misunderstood the situation with the tesco bakery (fletchers) in Barnsley closing.
Its a myth that they(supermarkets) create large numbers of jobs though,I was involved last year in a campaign to stop a superstore being built...when you look in to the figures(I haven't just got them at hand)they employ far fewer than the figures projected in their publicity campaign...and then mostly part time with a relative handful of full timers.
No B&Q in Barnsley though yet two in Rotherham. Also, the one at Cortonwood is a right pain in the arse to get in and out of - personally I'd have shut that one.
If that's true and one store had to close then that's fair enough. They won't be getting my custom though - I can't stand that Cortonwood site. Queuing from the roundabout on the by-pass. Too many stores with only one entrance. Asda car-park too small so traffic backs up acroos two roundabouts. Nearly an accident every day at that stupid bend for MacDonalds where cars turning right across the traffic have right of way over those coming straight on - barmy
I didn't say they created large numbers of jobs, you don't need to convince me,i've been an independent shop keeper for 16 years and know how they operate, but outside the nhs the top 4 supermarkets are the biggest employers in the country. However this doesn't mean they are a positive thing, you only have to look at more or less every high street in the country to see what effect supermarkets have on other businesses and jobs.
I hope you don't mean the first turn in at McDs, which is one-way away from Macs. Nearly been run over several times walking up there by idiots going the wrong way down it
Personally I think Barnsley needs a Sainsburys - ill go there. Better than Asda, Tesco or Morrisons hands down. Morrisons must already be struggling with Lidl and Aldi opening recently I can see them being the losers in this- and possibly Tesco due to proximity
Morrisons is rammed. Lidl is rammed. Iceland is rammed Marks n sparks is rammed. Tescos is rammed Asda is rammed. Based on a Saturday morning trip to one of those hell holes.
We won all the arguments...when it got to the planning meeting, three(cross party)of the nine councillors on the planning committee, absolutely savaged the plan, and exposed it for what it was...we had a brief say...and then the vote..the councillors who never said a word just voted it through. Our case was slightly unusual because the land crossed the boundary from Doncaster into Rotherham so we weren't too dispirited(having expected it from Doncaster Council)and we knew we had a second chance to kill the plan if Rotherham rejected it..it really wasn't in their interest at all TBH.However the self same thing happened...three councillors took the plan apart...the developers representative lied (and I can say that with no fear)under questioning..and then the councillors who had nothing to say voted it through.Fortunately for us though it looks as though the Supermarkets who the developers thought they had lined up, also thought it was a bad idea....15 months on now and nothing has happened, even though the land was bulldozed ready for work even before the planning meeting!!..strange..or was it pre determined!! This was my first brush with these people and I have to say the planning laws need seriously looking at,when no matter how big the local opposition,or how bad the case for developing is things are given the green light,we had a lot of evidence to prove Council officers and the developers representatives can say anything they like,in our case the Councils Officer was shredded, having to admit he didn't have the answers or information to so many of our honest councillors questions..admitting the work requested had never been done(like a naughty schoolboy)....and then the dishonest just vote it through without any fear of having to justify their decision...absolutely disgraceful.
