    Any suggestions?

I don't fancy using that awful repair "paste" as it goes everywhere and just falls off after a day or two!

I was contemplating using tin foil, surely that would work as a temporary measure? It needs to be replaced at some point soon any way.

Tin can cut open to make a sheet and some baling wire. Otherwise could see if secondhand available. Never works for long.

Replacing it at the end of the month before its MOT any way, so it is a very temporary repair I'm after :)

Just drive about with it and not give a **** like a bird on stocks lane who dove around on a flat for two months.

Safest drive ever though you needed to be dead not to hear her coming.

It is starting to sound rather chavtastic when I pull away from junctions with the added "bass" to the exhaust!

It's over a metre long, just wrap it around a few times. It might not provide a perfect gas tight seal, but it'll muffle the majority of the noise. It's much better than that gum **** and a doddle to put on.

Has anyone ever put a potato in an exhaust pipe? What happens?

Gun gum repair bandage and a bit of their paste, I once put some on just to tide me over for a few days until I could get it sorted - I totally forgot about it and 4 months later when the car was serviced I had a new back section fitted. The paste on its own is absolutely rubbish.
